1.Is it possible to make it so SeaMonkey wont check email until "mail and
newsgroups" is opened?
and 2.Is there a way to make "mail and newsgroups" automatically check all
newsgroups for new messages when I open it? (like it did in SM 1.x)

There's an option in the Preferences window...

That was hidden in 1.x too; you'll need to resort to about:config to
change the news.persist_server_open_state_in_folderpane preference.

That's not the problem, when I open "mail and newsgroups", SeaMonkey checks
my email account but it does not automatically download new headers for the
newsgroups accounts (although the accounts ARE in the open state when the
window opens), I have to manually select the account and hit "get messages"

My mistake, I forgot that the "Check for new messages on startup"
preference has been separately added to each news server in the account
manager.

I can't find this preference in about:config.
