Mozilla is a slightly different software company in that we discuss all of our development procedures in the open. I'm the Director of Firefox, and lately I've been talking about how some of the assumptions that we held about how we could deliver a key piece of technology - the ability to run plugins in their own process - have turned out to be mistaken. We previously believed that the change would be so invasive that it would require API changes that would dictate a version bump to indicate to Add-on authors and others that they needed to attend and react to those differences. It turns out, however, that the changes are isolated enough that we are going to try to deliver them as a "stability" update (since they, indeed, improve overall product stability!) as a 3.6.something release.
Previously these assumptions meant that we'd ship a release midyear (which we'd tentatively numbered Firefox 3.7) and then another near the end of the year. It may end up being the case that we can actually divide various improvements as Firefox 3.6.x improvements and give ourselves a longer runway for the interactive changes that benefit from longer design iterations, delaying a "major" release until later in the year. We may change the version number, too.
The plans and proposals are coming fast and furious and things change all the time. Until we get to betas of a specific release, anything can happen, so the best way to keep in touch is to track our releases.

Oh, the link above and my quote is to slashdot, which got it wrong. In
that article is an update with another link, to the CNET article which
has a a long article and I guess they get something right. So forget
what I asked.
