I am a developer of sorts and was wondering where to begin if I wanted to
build a lightweight Firefox based browser? What is needed is to strip
down Firefox of most current features and modify the UI?

What do I download? What do I read as a guide? Etc...

Thanks in advance!

You could have a look at the mybrowser sample application. It is a very
lightweight browser based on XULRunner. That would be what you get if
you strip down Firefox to the maximum.

More information about XULRunner: http://developer.mozilla.org/en/XULRunner

I am a newbie at browser development, so my question is. Would it be
easier to build upp XULRunner with features or Remove Features from
Firefox?

I really only need: foward, back, stop, tabs, and the left search box and
url box.

The mybrowser sample does most of it, except tabs and the search box. So
I guess it would be easier to start from there.
I can also check out Fennec for a lightweight XULRunner based browser
(http://starkravingfinkle.org/blog/2008/10/fennec-m9-user-experience-alpha).
