Currently there is nice way to compact toolbar yet still have most functionality - by uniting some of buttons (back+forward, bookmarks & reload+stop in address bar).

Can that be extended so that they are united even when placed elsewhere? For example i'd love to be able to move bookmark "star" control and reload+stop on the left side of address bar and still have those controls integrated within bar just on the other side. I don't see big drawbacks to that if it's done via some about:config UI key and not doing that by default.

Also, why not make also "united" new tab+new window button? As in if in same fashion they are placed next to each other, show it as single button, that:
- left click: new window
- middle click: new tab
- (optionally if there is copied url in clipboard, then middle click/"paste": opens this url in new tab)

As for those that might cry foul about UI changes to something they are used to - same approach of about:config option/not as default, just this time extra key is about unifying buttons with values: All, None, Back+Fw;Reload+Stop;New tab+New window in different combinations (eg. default as old UI:Back+Fw;Reload+Stop), so that they will have whatever already is default, even if they put buttons that can unify side by side but want to keep them separate and not integrated in address bar.

Forgot to add, what reason might be NOT to unify back/forward when small icons selected?
(BTW, mentioned in OP about:config option to set which specific buttons are unified imho may fit also for this case for all camps giving option to select whichever way they prefer)

That would not make much sense to a lot of people. Toolbar buttons
typically are left-clicked. If you had to click a combined
forward-backward button with left button to go back and middle-click to
go forwards, that would be tricky to adjust to, and what is the point?
You cannot combine everything. Combining bookmark with reload-stop does
not make sense to me at all. If I want to reload a page or stop it from
loading, will I want to bookmark it as well? Not likely.

Why combine bookmark with reload+stop? Just reload+stop as it is already now near bookmark and within address bar .. just option to put it on left side of it, closer to other buttons without disabling unifying.
Now i have separate new tab|new win (would prefer combined), backward and forward (as small icons, also separate :( ), addressbar with bookmark, combined reload+stop in it on right, bookmarks and folders, search box. Making few UI elements more compact definitely won't hurt, leaving more width to addressbar & bookmark folders and will look cleaner.
My point is - unifying is already there (if you place specific buttons in specific order), so why not make it a bit more flexible on placement, clearly selectable if user wants it or not, and to list of buttons that can be unified - new win+new tab added.
