I see in the latest nightly when opening a new tab appears a sort of
dashboard option of pages to open (instead of a blank page).

-I presume the choices shown are from stats of what pages have been chosen
for a new tab in the past - what is the algorithm?

-The choice surprisingly not offered is Google search, which is both my home
page and probably the most common thing I do with a new tab, which is why I
am wondering about the algorithm.

surprised me as I never leave gmail logged in - turns out I was not logged

We use Places to query the most frequently visited pages. There is some
talk about the sites shown on the New Tab Page here on
http://bugzil.la/723981

That's a good question. It probably does not have a high frecency score
because you never type it and it's "only" your homepage. I don't know
much about the frecency algorithm itself but there are people that
hopefully can explain this better.

Thumbnails are taken while you're browsing so that they show a realistic
image of the page. They do not reflect the current state.
