Sounds like a misbehaving extension. Can you do the following so that
we can look into this for you:
1. Type about:support in the addresss bar and press enter
2. Click the "Copy all to clipboard" button.
3. Paste the results into this list

If you do this we may be able to help you.

You get many junk extensions, any extension wich made preview go
increasing the memory footprint.
Between the worse are
> Tabs Menu
> 1.4.8
> true
> {dc5d9a10-2736-11da-8cd6-0800200c9a66}
The funcionality is included in Tabmix plus, instead of the menu is
rightclicking accesible

> 1,6,2,48

Not necesary for download updates of adobe,Install User Agent Switcher
and when you need download an update change the UA to netscape 4.78.
You will download the correct installer without the download manager of
adobe, the files are named like install_flash_player_32bit.exe

Fx already have a link reputation system, using with the avg webshield
is not necesary, i remember read in the web is a cause of constant
crashes or delay of firefox

If IE is already the memory hogh by excelence, adding theIE engine to
firefox speak by itself

If the extension is made with restarless feature of firefox this is not
necesary, for all other increase the posibility of leaks for the not
compatible extensions with restartless

You have quite a lot of of extensions. Each one takes up some ram. Do
you actually USE all of them? If not, consider paring the list
somewhat. The more extensions you have, the more likely there is to be
a conflict, and/or memory leak.
At the moment, Firefox is taking up 141meg, and I have about 20
extensions loaded.

Thanks for using Firefox, but this is not a support forum. It is a
software development forum.

You can find Firefox support at http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/home

Good luck.

This has been a frequently reported problem by many different users since
before v3.0 yet it does not seem to be even acknowledged let alone fixed.

At the moment I am looking a FF taking up 1.4 GB of (virtual) RAM plus
another .6 GB in two instances of Plugin-container. (1.1 + .04 GB
respectively private).

CPU usage is currently minimal but will eventually peg out at 100% of the
single CPU (out of two) that FF uses. And then crash.

If it wasn't for the session manager extension, I would long ago have been
looking for necks to break.

What does it take to get something as basic as this acknowledged and fixed?

What does it take for users to understand, keeping history forever,
never clearing the cache, opening a gazillion tabs at once, probably
several with flash, having a ton of extensions, loads of bookmarks, and
who knows what other factors, all have a bearing on how much memory is used.

I open one tab, never save browsing history, always clear the cache,
have 10 extensions, 4 themes, and 9 plugins.

My Firefox is currently using 204 MB, hasn't crashed in I don't know
when, and starts up really fast.

Shouldn't the default settings within the browser. Be set to stop this happening. If it is due to having a full cache history etc?

Well, that is the typical snotty response that I have come to expect from
Mozilla.
"That's not the way I use FF, so don't bother me.." or
"It doesn't happen to me so it can't be FF..."

And you probably think you area typical user with only one tab open and
don't use any history! It reminds me of the buglist discussions years ago
regarding implementing tabs in Mozilla. Despite many user's requests the
Mozilla party line was: "Don't bother us with frivolous requests. If you
want tabs go use an extension." No wonder you are losing market share.

And by "Mozilla" you mean "random community member the same as yourself"
right? Or is anybody who replies to you "Mozilla"?

The response I see from Mozilla tends to be "Please file a bug so that
we can investigate your problem more". I don't call that snotty, I call
that trying to diagnose problems in an orderly fashion.

BTW, file a bug please :)

There have been a number of fixes in this area, which have usually
helped those users who reported issues that could be reproduced.

The thing is, there is not a single problem here. There is a number of
related problems. There is no single fix that makes it all better,
therefore. When someone reports an issue, it can be analyzed and fixed;
that helps some people but not others who are seeing a problem with
similar symptoms but different causes.

Filing a bug and then helping developers pin down what is causing the
problem in your particular case.

The first step in diagnosing this is almost certainly to try disabling
all your extensions and seeing whether the problem persists. If it does
not, then the next step is figuring out which particular extension or
combination of extensions is triggering the issue and why. If the
problem is still present with all extensions disabled, that's useful
information.

The second step is to look at about:memory, both with and without
extensions and see what's using the memory. Attaching this output to
the bug (you can just copy/paste from about:memory) would probably help
developers pin down what's going on in your case.

Please do file a bug report on this.

Thanks,
Boris
