App tabs and page titles

I've been playing with app tabs, and using gmail as an app-tab has one
distinct disadvantage. Previously I could see whether there were unread
messages by scanning the page title in the tab. Now that the app-tab doesn't
show the page title any more, I am not reminded that I need to actually
click on it. That means sometimes I go hours without opening gmail, and end
up with a boatload of bugmail.

Is there some other way for the app-tab to show that kind of status, without
allowing it to pop up system notifications?

I'm not sure if there's a specification, but I know that the mobile team
and I suspect the Chrome OS team are looking at some sort of system that
allows websites to "badge" a tab much like OSX dock icons can be
"badged" with semantic information.

Maybe something similar-to or based-on:
http://dev.w3.org/2006/webapi/WebNotifications/publish/ ?
