Hey Guys,

As part of Summer Code Party 2012 I was planning on organizing a Hack Jam
in Pune on June 23rd and 24th preferably at Symbiosis Institute of Computer
Studies & Research (SICSR) to mark the start of Mozilla Summer Code. I was
planning on hosting sessions on Hackasaurus and Hackasaurus Toolkits. My
basic plan being as follows:-

Since the college (SICSR) is basically an IT college a large part of the
attendees would primarily be college students who are quite aware of basic
web technologies, we can host an initiation kind of event where the
attendees can be told about what Hackasaurus/X-Ray Goggles/etc. is, and
also spread the word about Mozilla Summer Code Party. Here we can encourage
the attendees to organize their own small Webmakers like events such as
MozKitchens where they can teach their friends and family and thus spread
more awareness about the web. The attendees at the event can be given
interesting yet simple projects on which they can work and also gather
basic experience on how to organize their own Webmakers like events.

This event would also be quite advantageous in two other aspects:-

1. Since June is the time new sessions start at most colleges around
Pune, it would serve as an excellent platform for new students to know more
about Mozilla and its efforts.
2. People who are not directly connected with Mozilla and its various
activities and are unaware of the various webmakers efforts, stand to gain
a lot of experience from this opportunity. This may thus pave a way in for
new potential volunteers and contributors for Mozilla in Pune.

Though the details and venue haven't yet been confirmed, I'm in the process
of planning the details for the event. I would be very grateful if you
could give me ideas/suggestions regarding what topics can be covered during
the Hack Jam or anything else of relevance to the event.

Also, since the event is being organized in Pune, it would be great if we
could have all the existing volunteers/ReMos in Pune and surrounding
regions come together to make the event a grand one and mark the start of a
very successful Summer Code Party.

Finally I would also like to know what other events are being planned by
Volunteers/ReMos throughout the country for the Summer Code Party. It would
be interesting if we could have such grand events throughout the country,
as a start to the Summer Code Party. This could thus serve as a big boost
towards web awareness of general people throughout India.

Regards,
Sayak

Hey Saurabh,

That would be of great! :-)

Anyways, do you have any specific ideas which you can share about the
event? Also since I'm currently not in Pune, I haven't yet been able to
finalize the venue. Hence, I'm a little confused, can we file budget and
swag requests before finalizing a venue?

Sayak

Hey there,
I do not have any specific Idea so far. But we can list out here and get
the input from others. About the vanue we can get Symbiosis college or if
we want we can do at some cafe like Cafe Aroma or something like that.
About Swag and budget request, if we are planning to get them then we need
to make it hurry as it will take some time to approve and come to those
swags. Let me know how many people we are expecting ? and based on that we
can place swag and budget request. Also i am curious to know why we need to
put budget request ?

Hi,

For the venue I may be able to confirm Symbiosis within the first week of
June once I join for new sessions. Also about the budget request, it was
just a general query, even I don't think we would require filing a budget
request, a swag request should suffice. If we do it at SICSR I would expect
an audience of around 100-150.

Also I would love it if more people would reply to this thread and share
their ideas with us.

Also can anyone please let me know whether I should create a new event in
the wiki and place a swags request now or should I wait for the venue to be
finalized?

Regards,
Sayak

You need to finalize everything and then make the swag / budget request.

Also i have few bands and buttons left with me as i just went to event at
Germany and i have got swags for that. Also i have table cloth. So we can
just get the less swags.

Wow! Looks like you guys are planning something big.
BTW, are you focusing on any particular age group?

I am planning for a Hack Jam at Hyderabad (mostly) or it'll be in Bangalore in the month of July.

For now, all I can think of is Hackasaurus, Thimble, X-ray goggles and probably create few more projects using all the Mozilla tools available.

@Aisha You are most welcome to participate in the event. Maybe you can have
chat with Gune Sir or Vidya Ma'am and see if we can finalize SICSR as the
venue before I reach Pune itself. Once that's done, we can concentrate on
the specifics of the event. If the venue gets finalized before I reach Pune
you can reply on this list, and maybe Saurabh can help document/register
the event on Mozilla Events.

@Saurabh That's a good news, I'm expecting an audience turnout of around
100+. If the existing amount of swags are enough then its good, otherwise,
we may have to turn in that swag request ASAP. I would be traveling for the
next couple of days, so I don't think I would be able to register all the
details. If the venue gets finalized by tomorrow itself, maybe you can put
in the swag request. Also since you are also a Rep from the Pune region
itself, I would suggest requesting a bit more of swags, as we are planning
on hosting a string of MozCafes and MozKitchen events starting next
month. That way we won't have to request for swags and stuff every time we
decide on hosting such events.
@Galaxy We aren't actually focusing on any specific age groups, but since
the event is going to be held in an IT college hence we do a general idea
that mostly students around 18 - 22 would be present.

Same here. Another thing that I was thinking about was that since, most
students in Symbiosis have some idea about Mozilla and its various
initiatives, due to the past events hosted in the college, maybe we can
talk about how to get proactively involved with Mozilla, and various
volunteering opportunities in Mozilla.

Alright , I will make the swag request and also can help with document or
add event into the list etc. I will do and paste the link here over the
weekend if we decide and finalize the place.
Also i think we have summer code party template too and we can add the
event here as well : https://webmaker.org/en-US/events/

I dont think so that there should be any problem with organizing this in
SICSR, Gune Sir is very kind in giving space for Mozilla Events :)

Hey Tejas,

Nice to know that you are interested in our efforts to organize a #MozParty
at Pune. I'm currently in the process of finalizing SICSR as the venue for
the event. The minutes of the details are still being planned as we are
still awaiting a final confirmation from the college authorities.

I had highlighted the basic idea behind the event in an earlier mail as
follows:-

As part of Summer Code Party 2012 I was planning on organizing a Hack Jam
> in Pune on June 23rd and 24th preferably at Symbiosis Institute of Computer

It would be great to have people from COFSUG, VIT and PICT participating
in the event.Maybe some of you can even conduct talks/workshops on various
web technologies and web making in general. Also, we are thinking about
organizing a series of events throughout Pune as part of #MozParty, maybe
after the June 23rd event you can help us in organizing another event in
COEP.

You can forward this mail to all interested people and maybe with the
participation of more volunteers we can make the Summer Code Party a grand
Success.

Regards,
Sayak

Hey Guys,

I've posted the event to the events wiki. The link to it is as follows:-

https://wiki.mozilla.org/MozParty_Pune

I haven't yet updated the links for it yet as we haven't yet have a blog
post about it. It anyone would like to create or has already created a blog
post or web page for the event, do let me know and I'll update the wiki
accordingly.

Sayak

I dont think getting SICSR as venue would be an issue. Prof Gune is very
open hearted in providing Venue for FOSS activities anyone out there in
Pune can contact him.

Success.

Regards,
Sayak

Hey Guys,

@Saurabh I agree, we should have a meetup as quickly as possible. This week
would be great. I had a chat with with sir as well, but at the moment he is
quite busy with the new sessions and hence the delay. I expect to get a
confirmation within this week itself, but in the meantime we should start
gearing up for the event as well. It may also speed things up if someone
like Abhishek or Rajesh who are more experienced and senior to me in the
community could also talk to sir as it would add some added weight to
event. Also, it's high time we start deciding what workshops/talks are to
be organised and also which other local open source groups can be invited
for the event.

@Rajesh Can you also please give us some suggestions about what other
topics we can have sessions on within the purview of Mozilla and Webmaking.

I was also thinking of incorporating 10 years of Mozilla and Summer Code
Party launch celebrations together.

Any ideas on that?

Regards,
Sayak

That's fine with me. Though i don't know much about the camp area, so
cannot suggest much about locations. Maybe you can suggest a venue and all
pune volunteers can meetup over there.
Also, Rajesh, Soumya you got any convenient locations in mind??

a confirmation within this week itself, but in the meantime we should start
gearing up for the event as well.

For now let SICSR be the meetup venue, I will talk to the management and
update you all the same. If you have any questions, let me know.

Hi,

Thats a great suggestion Vineel, having the meetup in the college itself
would also allow us to directly interact with the college staff. Also, you
having a talk with the management would be of great help.. :)

Hi,

This is to inform you that we have finalized Symbiosis Institute of
Computer Studies & Research, Pune as the venue for the event on 23rd-24th
June and have official confirmation from the college authorities. I have
also Cc'ed this mail to Mr. Harshad Gune, the Dy. Director of SICSR to keep
him updated about all informations to be decided upon in this mail.

Also, he has agreed to us holding a pre-event meetup to decide upon all
minute details for the event, this Sunday, i.e. the 17th of June 2012.
I would like to request everyone who have so far shown their interest to be
a part of this event to be present for the meetup, so can that we can
finalize all details about the event as soon as possible.

I would request all ReMos and Interested Volunteers who are currently in
and around the Pune region to let me know their preferences of time through
this thread preferably by tomorrow, i.e. 16th June 2012 afternoon, so that
I can finalize the time for the meetup and make the necessary arrangements.

Please let me know, if anyone has any doubts / suggestions.

Regards,
Sayak Sarkar

Hey Guys,

In today's meetup we discussed about the specifics of next week's event. We
have created an etherpad for the same, the link to which is included below.
We have made a rough schedule for the events of that day, i.e. 23rd June
2012. The timings and speakers for the events haven't yet been finalized,
so if anyone wants to conduct a talk / workshop, please feel free to
contact us freely.

Could you please elaborate this a bit. As in what do you exactly mean by
regional celebration?
