Hello,

Just a few ideas which could possibly form the nucleus for future
Drumbeat community projects

# An internet that supports free & fast broadband for all its users
# An internet that respects net neutrality
# An internet that is sustainable (or carbon neutral)
# An internet that is built on an open architecture
(How about a project to encourage Microsoft to open up its Windows
OS & similar
campagins for Twitter / Facebook ? )
# Actively promoting open source alternatives to closed walled solutions
like facebook , twitter , .. to our Drumbeat community and encouraging
other to take up these platforms too

It's so exciting and far reaching this Drumbeat project ;-)

Best, Paul

Free as in price or as in freedom?

I can't see how one could ever measure success on such a project...

Windows openness seems like it's outside our scope, and anyway, it'll
never happen. My strong suspicion is that the rights of too many other
companies are embedded in their source code, and the flood of security
bugs would be overwhelming. OSes will move on before Microsoft could
sort all that out.

No argument there, although there's a question about who we anoint.

Hey everyone - for the purposes of this "Ideas" stream, I'm going to
suggest that we treat this area as a brainstorming space. We'd prefer
to get lots of ideas - even ideas that may not work - rather than
generate discussion around whether or not an idea is valid/will work.

I think there could be a political advantage to putting pressure on microsoft, windows, etc. even if it is a losing battle. Mostly because I think it is a losing battle _for now_. At some point the next "thing" will come out, and as the public becomes more conscientious of the advantages of open, the ground work will have been laid for a competitor to tout their openness as a reason why their product is superior, for example. The onus will be on them to prove they are not hostile to the growing open constituency. In short, I think putting the ask out there forces them to say no and puts them in an unfavorable position so that a foundation is laid for whatever next step opportunities may emerge.
