If you can't make it now (Air Mozilla), we'll be hosting another one on
Wednesday. Details below.

Dear Mozillians:

I hope you are able join me for a conversation with Cathy Davidson
either tomorrow June 4 or June 6 (details below). In preparation for
these conversations I thought I would outline the criteria I use to
evaluate candidates for leadership positions at Mozilla. (Here's an
FAQ related to the role of Mozilla Foundation board members:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Board/FAQ)

Criteria:

High Integrity. This is my prerequisite. Integrity doesn't require
that I agree with someone, or that I like them, or even that s/he is
personable. I like Wikipedia's definition:

"Integrity is a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods,
measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes.....As such, one
may judge that others "have integrity" to the extent that they act
according to the values, beliefs and principles they claim to hold."

Then, I look to see how much someone internalizes and is driven by the
Mozilla mission. A person doesn't have to love any particular
activity, but s/he must feel driven to bring openness,
self-determination and opportunity into our relationship with technology.

I look for the abilities to listen, to learn, to teach, to lead, and to
empower others. Success is not when one of us becomes important.
Success is when more people are successfully engaged in moving our
mission forward.

And of course I look to see the expertise and skills a candidate
brings. In Cathy's case this is a wealth of experience with education,
with bringing collaborative thinking into educational and learning
endeavors, open badges and building web literacy through Mozilla-style
doing and learning projects. Here's some more information about Cathy's
work with Mozilla so far: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Board/CathyDavidson

Look forward to you joining us this week.

Mitchell
