Subject: Weave v0.5pre2 Released
We've got a number of performance gains and sync improvements in the
latest Weave 0.5pre2:
- Sync Performance: don't hang Firefox when syncing - Bookmark Sync: tags, smart tags folders - Form Sync: reasonable default number of items - UI Cleanup: other computer tabs, log levels, disabled engines
https://people.mozilla.com/~cbeard/weave/dist/latest-weave.xpi
This should help with people running into long sync times (such as too many bookmarks or form entries). And if you've disabled various data types because they were causing slowness, try turning them back on with 0.5pre2.
Please let us know if your "slow sync" problems are gone (or got worse somehow). And file bugs or ask questions here or on irc.mozilla.org #labs: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Labs/Weave/ReportingBugs

Well, although my Firefox has stopped freezing it still is *very*
unresponsive when sync is in progress.

What kind of hardware are you using?

First any issue I had went away with v0.5pre1 and no new ones with
v0.5pre2
It does seem to me that possibly many issues here could by isp
connection related and or comps hardware.
One thing of the first issues I would ask is how many system processes
running in tray are making connection to internet. How many FF ext's
are using bandwidth. The only time I have notice even a small lag is
when ext. "update scanner" is running.
Just for comparison and analyst purposes it would be helpful to see
more comp and connection specs.
I have several hundred bookmarks... no issues.
On an AMD 9550 4core 64bit Vista
My connection avg speed is 32MB download / 3.8MB upload

I don't think so. Come on, my hardware is not *that* old. As to the
connection speed - my complaint is not that synchronization is slow,
the problem is Firefox becomes unresponsive.

I only have Firebug and Adblock installed. And I had only one tab opened.

I have installed the newer 0.5 pre2 and while it does not freeze
Firefox 3.5 while syncing, it still does slow it down. In all I think
that it is a big improvement and that Weave is headed in the right
direction. From a programmers standpoint I do not think that it is a
hardware problem. It could possible be a thread problem, but no matter
how many threads you run in the background you will still see some
performance lag while Weave is reading the Firefox settings and other
sync able items.

Whoa, BIG improvement with 0.5pre2!
Hardware is typical Netbook (Atom N270, 1GB RAM, GM950, 160GB
Harddisk)
Before (0.5pre1), complete sync (the one necessary after updating
Weave) could last up to 10 minutes (the bandwith is not the
bottleneck) and Fx froze often completely, up to the point that open
menus from Fx were visible all the time even when trying to work with
other application (after ALT-TAB).
Now, complete sync duration was 1:46, doing sync for bookmark, history
and passwords. During that,Fx was slow sometimes but did never freeze
completely.

What I forgot to ask:
Does Weave now use Web Workers, if not, is this on the roadmap for the
future,or will it be impossible/useless to use Web Workers?

So far, so good! Syncing no longer ties up the browser resources like
05pre1 did!
Good job! Now waiting for 0.5pre3

No, it doesn't. Weave needs to do xpcom calls, which are not possible from
web workers. So while we could split some pieces out and run them on worker
threads we would not get a big payoff.

Weave (0.4.0) hung FF (3.5.1pre / ubuntu amd64) so often that I
finally disabled it.
I installed this new version and now everything seems to be fine.
Thanks.

It seems like the sync stopped after this point for some reason. Did
you happen to get a "slow script" warning and cancel it?
I'm assuming you've restarted your browser at some point since then, and is Weave able to sync correctly now?

Right. The big change in 0.5pre2 should allow you to keep using the
browser while Weave is syncing instead of making it seem like it's
hanging. Weave is probably using 100% CPU doing encryption, so that's
why everything slow down. But curious, when Weave is syncing, it's no
worse than if you had another application running at 100%, no?

Will be there a version for OpenSolaris too?

We don't make builds for Solaris, but community members do.

Shmerl,
Pick it up here:
http://www.genashor.com/mozilla
I've been building Weave for the OpenSolaris x86 community until the Weave community officially supports it.

Shmerl,
No problem. I'm happy to do it.
Just a heads up... I'll be leaving Friday for the DAC conference in San Francisco. If there is a new Weave version released I won't be able to build the OpenSolaris installer until I return on Aug 3rd.
