The maximize button in Mac OS annoyingly actually maximizes the window...

Well, here is something bothered me about Firefox ever since I got my
new iMac. You see, in both Safari but also in Chrome, when you click
on the green maximize button, the window adjusts itself to its
standard width (that is the width of a standard website). In Firefox
the window just maximizes since that is set to be the standard size of
a window (but in most cases it's not the standard width of a website).
While it might sound obvious to use a maximize button to maximize, it
is however frankly rather annoying and, I believe, also a lost
opportunity for improvement. A lot of new Macs are widescreen and so a
maximized window is simply too large. So why not change it?

The idea is this:
- You can choose your own custom size of the window. So when you click
on the button it jumps to the standard size. Click again and it goes
back to your standard size.
- If you make mistake in Firefox you have to play around it until you
get back to the standard size because by clicking on the button you
make things even worse.
- Those who still want to have a maximized window can set it up as
their custom size so they do not loose.

And a challenge is this. Safari has it even better as the maximize
button actually adjusts the window to the actual width of the website
and thus if there is a website that is exceptionally wide you just
click and all's sorted.

So, please, can you do that?

I'd hate to see this, it sounds nice and convenient but it's actually
one of the most annoying problems in OSX is the completely
unpredictable because different programs operate differently. I
really shouldn't have to think "how does this program behave when I
use a bog standard interface element?"

I agree, I far prefer "maximize" being ...just that... (itunes is the
worst for it really). I love firefox for its actual maximizing, its
one of the first reasons I actually permanently stopped using safari
unless a website required it...
