Week in the Life of a Browser: Idle-detection doesn't seem to work

Hi all!

It seems the idle-detection doesn't work for me. I leave my FF running
all day even when I'm away to work, yet the summary shows that the
browser has never been idle at all. Apart from that TP seems to be
collecting data alright. Anyone else seeing this?
Anything I could check?

Cheers,

Same with me. It says I have 0 idle hours despite having FF running
all day. For the times that FF is idle, the graph shows that FF isn't
running. I do see "Resume Active Use" in the logs so it does seem to
be logging active use time, but isn't displaying it correctly.

hi Morac and Animal,

Are you on Test Pilot v0.4? If you are on v0.3 and the idle time will not be correct.

If you are on v0.4, could you describe a bit more about your computer setup? which version of Fx you are using, is it nightly or beta? Any settings and add-on you think it may cause this problem?

Your information will be very valuable for us to fix this!

Thanks,
Jinghua

Hi,

FX 3.5.6, TP 0.4
I have same situation with chart and results on test page

"Browsing: You have spent a total of 79.88 hours actively using
Firefox this week.
Firefox was running but idle for a total of 0 hours."

My work computer is on all the day, so at least 12 hour should be
idle, but it isn't so.
Could it be because of open gmail, google reader or working mailbox in
ietab?

Regards,
Andrew

My setup is Test Pilot 0.4, FF 3.5.5 on Windows 7.
Extension-wise I've got Google Gears, TabMixPlus, UpdateScanner,
Ubiquity, Personas, IETab, All-in-One-Sidebar, Aardvark, FastDial,
FlashGot, NoScript, NoSquint, MRTech Toolkit, TabScope and a couple of
others which are probably inconspicious.

I've always got a tab open running Google Reader and another one with
Outlook Web Access via IEtab. There's often a tab with Facebook open
as well.

The same is true for me. Also, I often listen to online radio stations
in Flash windows that I leave in the background while working and not
otherwise using my computer. I'm not actually actively using the
browser at that point but the browser is registered as being actively
used. I guess this is a question of how you define "active" though...

Good information! Thanks for all your reply. We will talk with people (who defined the idle time) about the cases you mentioned.

Also, what about other situation, e.g. when you use offline Gmail? If you have other cases that may cause this problem, please share with me too. So we can improve it in the second phase.

Hi,

I've an other issue with the idle time dection. My computer was
shutdown on friday and rebooted this morning, but the Testpilot shows
that i was activly using firefox in this time. In the raw data is a
'Firefox startup' event from this morning and the last event on friday
was 'Bookmark opened'.

Testpilot 0.4, FF 3.5.5, Windows XP

I have had the same issue, no idle time shown. Im my case I may have
started the study with 0.3 installed and upgraded partway through the
week. Im another user of online radio. Specially a Prism app pointed
to http://www.newstalk1010.com/player/player.html . I think I still
should have had some idle time.

Firefox 3.5.5
Adblock Plus 1.1.1
Evernote Web Clipper 3.0.0.65223
Jave Quick Starter 1.0
Personas 1.4
Prism 1.0b2
Test Pilot 0.4
ubiquity 0.5.4
Weave 1.0b2

maybe those exceptions are related to this error (seen in Firebug
console):

I found that supposedly I used the browser for 124 hours a week..

The raw data doesn't show when the browser was Idle reliably... it
shows when you "return from idle" but not entering idle

Also I put my computer to sleep (standby) at nights and it doesn't
seem to register in the idle statistics...
Any idea why?

Also what is "idle" defined as? no mouse movement? no network traffic?
(some ajax pages like GMAIL and such auto-refresh)

FF3.5.5
Win7 64bit RC

Test Pilot 0.4 on XP SP2 running FF 3.5.5.
As for add-ons, I can't think of any that would interfere, but since I
can't find the code in Test Pilot that measures the idle time, I can't
say for sure. The ones that might interfere would be NoScript,
AdBlock Plus and GreaseMonkey.

I just awoke in a panic after an hour of sleep to realize that my
Firefox was not being counted as idle. I had a dream about this since
I read this thread before sleeping.

I will close gmail and google reader and see if that changes anything.

Night.

This seems to be a problem: I have it running on my laptop which was
in hibernate for the whole weekend, and the stats say that Firefox was
"actively running" during that time... Which it technically was, but
since the OS was not "running", this hardly counts ;-)

"You have spent a total of 190.26 hours actively using Firefox this

*hums Eight Days A Week*

Another possibility for messing up idle time: weather addons that
periodically checks for the current conditions.

Same story here, I was just asked to submit data today and was socked
to know that I've been running Minefield non-stop for 200+ hours.
I do leave the computer running overnight most of the times (sorry on
melting our polar ice but it's just to slow to start) but I'm
certainly not using it actively all that time.
IMHO "active" should be Firefox is the top-most window and there are
key presses or the mouse is either moving on it's window or at least
on top of it.
