I've heard a number of complaints about the name for sudoSocial,
whether it's non-geeks who don't get the concept of "sudo", to looking
at first glance like the name actually states "suicidal". I've been
thinking about what a better name for the SudoSocial project might be,
and thought I would throw out a couple options:
1 - Find a name for something very specific to the functionality of
the technology. For example - Soapbox. A Soapbox is a box that you
place on the ground, wherever you want, stand on it and say whatever
you want to whomever you want. You have control over what, where,
when, why. It's also easy to brand. But it definitely does have
connotations that are not ideal, such as eliciting arrogance or having
a political focus.
2 - Find a name that has nothing to do with the technology, which is
very much akin to how many Mozilla projects are named. Firefox,
Seamonkey, Thunderbird, etc. Grab an animal name that you like and
attach an elemental noun to the front of it. HailRobin. WindPigeon.
DrizzleCat. The name won't inherently describe the project, but
creating a succinct elevator pitch for the product will allow users to
quickly associate the project purpose to the project name.
These are just ideas that I'm tossing out and am hoping to spark some
name ideas.
Keep up the great work - I'm glad that this project is picking up a
little steam!
sudoSocial is defiantly a temporary name and I'm looking forward to
more suggestions.
I agree Soapbox is pretty good, but isn't quite right.
I <3 the African Golden Weaver [1] which makes incredible nests [2].
This name has issues with a Mozilla Weave, which is now Mozilla Sync.
Weaver and the image of the nest are good, because you are taking the
various bits from around the internet and weaving them to publish your
homepage (nest).
I was talking to Chris Finke last night, who develops Add-ons, and he
talked about how he got a name for "Foxfound"[3].
Let's keep the ideas coming!

I really like the concept of using Beaver as the name, as both
descriptors equate what sudoSocial is trying to capture. My concern
is that Beaver is used as a nickname for female genitalia, and that
the project would never be taken serious because of its name.
The European Beaver and the North American Beaver both belong to the
"Castor" genus, so naming it something like Wind Castor would also be
a possibility. However, there is another open source project named
the Castor Project - http://www.castor.org . If we prefix the name
with an elemental noun, will that allow us to have enough distinction
from the other open source project? There's also the Family name
"Castoridae".

I can understand your concerns about the English connotations of Beaver.
Elements... Wind is good. The platform would help tame "the firehose of information". So natural elements like: * Wind * Geyser * Eruptions (Volcano) * Pyroclastic Flow or elements that stop a Firehose * Ice * Glacier * Avalanche
Castor is an interesting idea. Especially if we could find a French word for an element that worked. I'll ping Geekshadow to see if he has thoughts for this thread.
Also, we should explore outside of the animal. Dam and lodges are created by beavers. Visually, you can use a Beaver, but the name would be about the "nest" it creates. WindDam WindLodge IceLodge GeyserDam
I think the best thing is to keep brainstorming and listing lots of names. Great work Ryan and MJae!

It's just like what we users do when we use SudoSocial: we get tiny
bits and pieces from around the web to build our home stream.
It's just too bad that there is a negative connotation of the word.
One question: Are we gonna go for the "element + animal/something"
else name format? Or can we throw in other stuff that can sound good
and appropriate for the project?

I really like the idea of using Dam in the name, because like you both
mentioned, it's a home that is created by gathering and collecting
multiple external bits and pieces. Words with 2 syllables preceding
the word seem to sound better than words with 1 syllable preceding it.
Some options -
FunnelDam
RiverDam
TorrentDam
WaterDam

Sounds great. I definitely think that a beaver would make a great mascot for the project. Even if we don't use Beaver in the name, the Beaver has such a strong influence to dams. And they're dam cute too.
Could you crowdsource the logo making through Creative Collective? Or maybe Sean Martell would be interested in creating a logo?
