For those who don't want to read, here is a link to the interactive
prototype :)

__Short Summary:__

As the antithesis of the iPhone's "scrollbar", this concept enhances the
traditional scrollbar with an abstraction of the scrollable content.

__Description:__

While the small screen of the iPhone forced the developers to come up
with a "bare minimum" solution, that only displays the size/position
relations between the viewport and the document. Even traditional
scrollbars do not display any more information than that, they only
thing that changes is the interaction with it.
On a large screen we have enough space to do better than this.

While viewing a document the user creates a map in his head to help him
navigate, to reinforce this the scrollbar should contain a smaller
version of the document. This preview shouldn't simply be a screenshot
or thumbnail of the page, but an abstraction of it to highlight special
markup such as links to create a more useful representation at the small
size.

Additionally scroll indicators (shadows in the direction of additional
content) are used to show that the document is larger than the screen.

The concept was created with multitouch input in mind but could be
easily adapted to a mouse/keyboard setting.
