**(*) IMAGINARY CRIMES (US 94) 5, 1210-1410#; Harvey Keitel, Fairuza
Balk.

**(*) THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY & BULLWINKLE (US 99) 2, 1425-1550; Piper
Perabo, Robert De Niro.
In order to help PP search for the 'Fearless Leader' (RDN of course),
2 cartoon characters are pulled out of TV re-runs! Yes, it's daft but
it's a compelling in-jokey mystery. RDN even does his "you talking to
me?" spiel at one point.

*** BATMAN & ROBIN (US 97) 5, 1740-1945#; Uma Thurman, George Clooney,
Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Batman and Robin fight Mr Freeze (AS) and Posion Ivy (UT) in this
exciting 4th film in the more recent 'Batman' series. GC is involved
in enough derring-do as Batman and ridiculous philanthropy as Bruce
Wayne to keep you enthralled.

** HEAT (US 95) 3, 2155-0035; Riobert De Niro, Al Pacino.
"De Niro and Pacino together for the first time" screamed the
billboards (and some critics). Well, as baddie and goodie
respectively, they're good but the film itself is an overlong, over-
complicated version of the same director (Michael Mann)'s "L.A.
TAKEDOWN".

+
*** THE BATTLE OF THE RIVER PLATE/ Pursuit Of the Graf Spee (UK 56)
M4, 1200; John Gregson.
*** EXPLORERS (US 85) F4, 1300; Ethan Hawke.
*** FANNY BY GASLIGHT (UK 44) F4, 1510; Phyllis Calvert.
*** CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (US 79) E4, 1810; Richard
Dreyfuss.

Three stars for Batman and Robin? The minus sign not work on your
keyboard?

Heat

Just wanted to comment. In my youth, when I seemed to have more free
time, films like "Heat" did not seem overlong. Now I can't watch
"Last of the Mohicans" in its entirety and "Miami Vice" is just overly
moody and stylized. I still think with, or without the two big
actors, and that moment of film history, that this is a good heist
film, though I thought the stick up bank job, and follow up shoot out
was not in character with the rest of the movie.

Hmm, talking of overlong it's 20+ years since I saw any version of
close encounters I wonder if I should re-watch it. Still haven't been
to Wyoming yet, nor shopped in a Piggly Wiggly.

Yes, I was expecting some comments about my dislike of "HEAT" (tho not
about my LIKE of "BATMAN AND ROBIN"!). When I saw "HEAT" at the cinema
it seemed to just go on and on (and the 'big' scene where RDN and AP
meet is filmed in a way which suggests they weren't even really
together - tho Michael Mann says they definitely were).
Then, about a month later, I saw "L.A. TAKEDOWN" and thought "God what
a brilliantly compact version of "HEAT"!"

Can you believe I had to import "LA Takedown" from the UK.

I don't think MM has to work with top actors, most of his films are in
the placement of items on the screen, wide dialogues, space between
characters, good use of subtle light. These are recurring themes in
Heat, Thief (violent streets), Manhunter.

I agree, the coffee shop dialogue was almost as if they were shot on
different days.

And I think I agreed that it is long.
