Every time I get a meeting notice or a MassCUE Calendar, I want to go!
Sometimes there is a conflict at the exact time, but other times, the
conflict isn't a precise match, and yet I can't go.
MOSSSIG wants to get you to participate in our meetings using a
virtual tool. There are many, and over time, we can explore each of
them to find the best fit for our needs.
The first one we want to try is called "Internet Relay Chat" (IRC). It
isn't new technology, but is still pretty powerful. It basically
provides you the chance to participate in a meeting from anywhere. It
is a little bit like Instant Messaging, but lets many people
participate, sort of like an old party line phone or a modern
conference call. It is text-based, so it requires very little beyond a
connection to the Internet. There are many dedicated client programs,
but there is also a tool that works inside a modern browser. That's
the path we want to recommend. Details are below.
Though some of you may know about IRC, it may be new to many. Here are
a couple of links to get you a quick understanding of IRC. Don't
worry, over the next few days, we will give you several opportunities
to get some "live practice".

To participate, fire up your browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer,
Safari, etc.)
Open a link to
http://webchat.freenode.net/
Enter your nickname (something like BillJones or BillJ)
Enter the channel for the session which is #mosssig (including the
hash mark #)
Click the Connect button. You'll be in.
If you follow these directions during the times listed below, you can
talk to somebody...whoever shows up. Algot Runeman will be there for
each one, so there will be somebody to chat with.
If you try at other times, the channel will probably be empty except
for you. (of course you could cajole some buddy from your school to
get aboard from the next computer in the lab so you could practice on
your own.
Thursday 3:00 - 4:00 PM = (practice get-together - come all or part of
the time - no pressure)
Friday 2:00 - 3:00 PM = (practice get-together - come all or part of
the time - no pressure)
Sunday 4:30 - 5:30 PM = (practice get-together - come all or part of
the time - no pressure)
* Monday 9:00 - 10:00+ (This is the actual meeting at which we want to
try to lay out a roadmap for the group moving forward. Notes from the
meeting will be posted here on the group mailing list afterwards.)
The essence of the process is to connect to an open IRC server and
then participate in the session by typing short messages. Short helps
so you aren't caught typing a long paragraph while the conversation
slips past the current topic.
When you finish, tapping the enter key will submit your message. It
pops onto the message area of the screen and others can read it. Don't
worry about spelling or worry too much about punctuation. The
conversation is informal. If, by chance, important things get "said",
they can be cleaned up later from the log of the session.
I am going to create a "Page" on the group with details and images,
etc. That page will be a stable reference for you.
When you are worn out and want to leave, just give us a warning that
you are leaving.
Type: /part - Got to go home to dinner. Bye!
Then just close down the browser. Don't worry about messages that say
you are navigating away from an active screen. That is okay to do.
Jon Green and I practiced on Wednesday afternoon. We had fun, I think.
Hope we can get all of you to join in.
