Entity cache - any serious users?

I was peering into a reported memory leak last night where the finger of blame is pointing at the entity cache.

Out of interest - can anyone report a use case in which this seriously improves performance?

Just wondering how many people would complain if the cache had to be expressly enabled at runtime...
