I have a client that requires a Canadian host for their Ruby on Rails
application due to privacy laws etc. Maybe my Google-Fu is lacking,
but there seems to a lack of significant players in Canada. I have
found a couple of hosts, but nothing that made me comfortable with
their offering. Can anyone provide recommendations on Canadian
hosting
for ROR please?

Thank you for your time,
Nicholas Henry

Note: I also posted this to Ruby on Rail Talk -- apologies for the
cross-post.

Hi Nick,

I think we mostly use american companies in our community. My understanding is that EC2, Linode and Slicehost/Rackspace are the most common options, unfortunately.

I haven't had the need to look at canadian hosting companies so I couldn't guess at what the state of things are :-\

My feeling is your best bet is going to be bugging the Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver people. Maybe one of them will have a proper recommendation.

Sorry we can't be more helpful.

I have used iweb (http://iweb.com/) 2-3 years ago, cie from QC. Support was ok... And reliability not so good. I'm sure it improved now and I've heard some good things about it.

Nicholas,

You might want to try Syntenic - http://syntenic.com. They offer hosting in Montreal. Might be too high end but still worth looking at. Ian Rae is the founder of the company there, should be easy to connect to through their site.

You can get a Linux VPS and install the Ruby on Rails stack.
Just choose a canadian VPS provider, like this:

Hi Nick,

I personally rent dedicated servers at iWeb and configure the RoR
stack on them. I used to be with another provider before and it was
terrible. Now, with iWeb I didn't have any problem so far and it's
been almost 2 years.

I like the stability of non-shared hosting environments, so that's why
I go with dedicated servers.

Thank you to everybody for their answers, much appreciated -- yes a
VPS would probably be the best way to go (I have done this for other
projects in the past). The hosting is for a Radiant-based website so
typically I don't mind going with shared hosting for this sort of
thing. Anyway, I thought I would give these guys a go: http://www.speedyrails.com/

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Nicholas

Yup... I have a few dedicated servers with them. Excellent service so
far.
