You'll get much better Ruby at railscasts.com or at peepcode.
At this "Open Corporate University" you get to see a flash movie of
powerpoint slides captured from the desktop:
http://www.softwaretrainingacademy.com/WB_VS2008_NF_MS2109.aspx

Or jump to minute 42. It's bad.

Ok, the dude's site isn't great (and written in asp) and it exists many other ways to educate yourself, but come on, don't gang up on the poor guy :)

Not everyone goes out and teaches themselves frameworks ;) now that
Rails is becoming more mainstream, there will be others who don't
learn well from books/online tutorials and would prefer to learn from
a class. Why doesn't Montreal on Rails do introductory tutorials like
this? I'm sure there's enough expertise among this group to give a
really good course.

We had a discussion on a topic similar to this at the last Montreal.rb (http://www.montrealonrails.com/ for dates).

http://rubyonrails.org/ offers a good introduction of what Rails does and provides ample resources to get on your way to be the next rails rock star.  Before shelling out 2 grand for a course shouldn't people try that first?  If someone hasn't learned with that and http://railscasts.com/ they can always fall back on paying money.

The community is also eager to help anyone who needs a hand.

Marc: welcome to Montreal.

I'm pretty sure that Marc is not responsible for the website of the
company he works for. The design is rather poor - at the prices they
charge, you'd think they could afford a designer - but par for the
course in the corporate sector.

AFAIK, that's the main market for this type of courses: companies that
want to get a group all working with a new technology.

We certainly have the expertise available in our community to teach
the classes. What it would take is for someone to take the lead on
organizing: finding a place, marketing and selling.

As was discussed at the last Montreal.rb, I'm far more interested in
creating a structure to help developers become great. Classes can only
get you so far; after that we need peers for pointers, challenge and
encouragement.

Both are useful. Hopefully all those teaching Ruby and Rails will tell
students about our events.

Marc, I hope you'll join us at our next regular Montreal.rb (3rd
Tuesday of the month). Maybe you'd like to present?

Anything that helps "propagation" of Rails in the IT community is
good. We miss people with RoR experience and companies need a decent
pool of talent in order to embrace RoR.

I would love teaching RoR in French (I was a Certified Teacher on a
RAD solution years ago and really liked teaching to a class).

We miss people with RoR experience and companies need a decent
pool of talent in order to embrace RoR.

Here are some of the companies using Rails: Apple, Philips, Intuit, eHarmony, Sony, Hulu, Yellow Pages, Adobe, NASA, NBC, BBC, Oakley, Disney, Qualcomm, Hasbro, Game Show Network, World Poker Tour, youtube, Google, Oracle, Disney, VW, Yahoo, the GOP etc...

I think it's fair to say that a lot of companies use Rails nowadays ;)

Regarding teaching Rails, I was in contact with a teacher who's teaching Ruby & Rails in French to his students. I also know of quite a lot of colleges/universities in the US who added Ruby & Rails to their curriculum. You might want to get in touch with colleges and unis around where you live.

Daniel, unfortunately he's the founder of that company.

If you look at the team page, you can see that:
Marc Bueno == Founder and Lead IT Trainer

The design is so 95'. The layout is really similar to my grand-ma
friend who has a personal hobby site about flower tips, some food
recipe, and pictures of cats.

It look like those site that sell google/ebay kit with very long name
that ends with "you can do like me", like the famous "I do 50k a month
with google in two hours a day and you can do the same as me!"

If you take the time to write click on a page of the site, and check
out the html source, its also horrible.

I mean, okay... you guy's are teaching programming so I'm not
expecting you to be an excellent designer, after all... this concept
of "web developer / code designer" is really unique to the ruby
community.... but honestly, I was expecting you're horrible site to
output semi-w3c-valid HTML/CSS but no! First, w3c-validator laughs at
you with 339 Errors, 191 warnings... Personally, I don't give too much
importance to validation, but its still an indicator of quality.

In this case the markup and don't follow any rule.

I assume you know that Rails is all about the web? web like in html
over http?

The web programming is mostly about whatever kind of code that
generate html response.
If you're html response are wrong, I can only assume that you're code
fail somewhere.

Also, every "complex" part of you're site seem to load some kind of
external widget.

Anyway, try to do something about this... It won't hurt and don't
really cost that much, maybe I'm over-rating the importance of classy
website.

I've read a few testimonials, I can't believe they are true,
honestly... The site has no identity, its doesn't build trust, and you
don't see name or companies.

I hope I didn't insult you or you're work if you did this site. You
can hire me, I've free time around mid-feb.

Here is a live example of what your site need to look like:
carsonified.com

They are not doing class-training but events, but site are similar =>
learning <> calendar <> resume.... etc

Good luck

@Marc, you should do something about your site because actually you
don't "feel" good practice.

Hi Marc,

Welcome to Montreal :)

As you can see we do are not very busy down here and we have time to
provide free reviews of websites.

Can you provide more info on the self-paced program? Do you have a
bio of the trainers?
