The Montana State History Conference is an annual, highly regarded event that the Montana Historical Society has been hosting for the past 35 years. In odd-numbered years the History Conference is held in Helena—the state capital and home of the Historical Society—and is devoted to varying themes relating to the state’s history. In even-numbered years the conference is held in other parts of the state, and the theme is devoted to the local history of that region. This year the conference will be held in the Northeastern part of the state in the small communities of Glasgow and Fort Peck. This locale was chosen because 2008 is being celebrated nationwide as the 75th anniversary of the New Deal, and the building of the Fort Peck Dam was one of the largest and most significant New Deal projects in the country.
Teachers are invited to attend the two and a half day conference (October 16-18). Thursday will include workshops on best practices for teaching Montana history and on integrating Indian Education for All into the classroom. Friday and Saturday will feature sessions on the New Deal in Montana, the Fort Peck Dam, the history of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, and many other topics. Renewal credits will be available.
