What is the unit for the distance returned by geoNear and what is the unit for specifying the radius of $center

I am trying to build out some geo functionality and need to know how
to convert between what I get and what I need (mostly specified in
miles).

Use case example:

User can specify a base address and a maximum radius to search by (in
miles).

I then do a query with the $center option and need to supply a radius,
but I have no idea what I need to convert my miles to for this radius.

They're in degrees - so 1 ~= 69 miles.
