I wanted to make a suggestion to have a 'save' option instead of
insert for a destructive restore. I am suggesting this because I made
a mistake and need to restore from a backup, but the main collection
is large and takes 2+ hours to restore. Now I have to drop it and in
the mean time it is only partially available. It would be better for
the restore to just be overwriting the duplicate records.

This wouldn't be a clean restore, but I think would be a useful
option.

thanks for the great product

Is there indeed a plan to add this option to mongorestore?
As of version 1.8.0 there is no such feature yet...

Thanks,

It was last discussed at
http://groups.google.com/group/mongodb-user/browse_thread/thread/88754f875aa37c88/eb969b5d04167ff9?#eb969b5d04167ff9.
I think this issue seems to be missing from http://jira.mongodb.org/.
You should file an issue there so it can be prioritized properly.
