MongoDB 1.8.2-rc0 is out and ready for testing.
This release contains a few fixes over 1.8.1.

Notable Changes:
- replica set stability when members changing
- performance issue doing initial shard of large collection
- check secondary status early in sharding chunk migration

Is the mongos race condition fix included in this build, or do I still
need to resort to the nightly builds for that?

You'll have to be more specific, as I don't know exactly what you're
referring to.
Anything that was in the 1.8 nightly is in this build.

Sorry, Mathias told me, "there was a race condition in mongos because
a function was called outside of a lock. If you have enough threads,
this could lead to a corrupt heap and a server crash." and indicated
that issue was fixed in the nightly builds.

There was a mongos race condition fixed in this release.
Not 100% sure this is the issue you're seeing.
