I am using MongoDB v1.4.3.

When creating databases for the first time a lot of disk space is
being allocated (even with --smallfiles given to the server at
startup). I will only be storing max 1MB of data in some of these
databases so it seems very wasteful to allocate so much more.

Is there any way to be specific about the size but without imposing a
fixed limit should the size grow?

Look at the --nssize, --noprealloc and --smallfiles options.
16MB seems the be the minimum initial database size.
