The first version of the 1.1.x development cycle has been released.
The 1.1.x series will include lots of new features and tweaks, as well
as bug fixes and stability issues. The major features we hope to work
on in this cycle are Sharding, Concurrency and Usability Features.

We do not recommend running 1.1.x in production. When this cycle is
complete, we will be release 1.2.x which will be the next stable
release. You can read more about version numbers here:
http://www.mongodb.org/display/DOCS/Version+Numbers

Some highlights from 1.1.0:
- Sharding Alpha 2
This includes changes to the sharding commands, as well as a
number of fixes and enhancements
See: http://jira.mongodb.org/browse/SHARDING/fixforversion/10012
Also now real documentation: http://www.mongodb.org/display/DOCS/Sharding
- Numerous indexing bug fixes
- $pop, distinct command, xulrunner support on Ubuntu

Because of some indexing changes, a db upgrade will be required.
See http://www.mongodb.org/display/DOCS/1.1+Development+Cycle for
instructions on how to upgrade and old database.

Nice. Having to upgrade the db to use 1.1.x means that users of stable
version will also have to upgrade when 1.2 is released? And i know
this is a tricky question, but... when do you expect do have 1.2
ready?

Yes - 1.2 will need an upgrade too, but we'll be making it faster in
1.1.1 or 1.1.2

Right now we're targeting early November for 1.2. . Jira is the best
place to track progress:
