Running MongoDB as a Windows Service - Doesn't Work

I followed the instructions flawlessly time and time again. I have tried several approaches and have resorted to tinkering to get even the slightest results.

I followed the MongoDB tutorial that was relevant to me: http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/tutorial/install-mongodb-on-windows/#mongodb-as-a-windows-service

That didn't work. I added a config folder which I saw in another tutorial just to see if it would work but it doesn't seem to have done anything.

I don't understand why I'm having these issues and why they aren't covered anywhere.

If someone is willing to take five minutes out of their time to help, I'd be glad to pass you credentials to my AWS instance.

The problem turned out to be that the config file was saved as Unicode (wide characters).  Using Notepad to re-save the file as ANSI made it work.
