My recommendation is that you wait a bit.

We are working on 2.0 and there may be lots of changes that would affect your work. Some of the changes are aimed at making it easier to provide better support for Powershell users. We are exploring the idea of providing external modules built on top of the core of the C# driver that target specific user environments like Powershell, F#, etc...

Is there a decent chance for an interim 1.6.x or 1.7 release?

There is a ticket that lists non generic classes that were added for PowerShell. I'd be willing to go that far at least in PowerShell test coverage for now if they were likely to make it to one release. If not I'll hold off
