The late Mr Ladis Da Silva, who hailed from Cahndor, had a special
affetion for the Momidekars in Toronto and we wish to remember him in
this small way in our brochure. He donated several paintings of the
Moira Church as prizes for our socials and his painting graced the
cover of our Mass Booklet in 1993.
Ladis wasa person who was determined to make sure that his knowledge
on subjects he was passionate about did not go to waste. He published
several books including The Americanization of Goans, Legendary
Chandor, An Island Kingdom, and Through A Doorway in Zanzibar. Indeed,
it was his contacts with the literary community that was instrumental
in introducing the GOA to the cultural scene through its first
Harbourfront Festival in 1977. He is specially known for his
distinctive paintings.
Ladis passed away in 1994. [From Villagers of Moira, Toronto, Silver
Jubilee 1971-1996)
Just a note to say the work of Ladis da Silva will be remembered later
today, when Goa sees the republication of the work of another
Moidekar, Dr Peter Nazareth of Iowa, whose anthology on Goan writing
is to be released at the Clube Vasco da Gama in Panjim at 5 pm. Do
come if possible! FN
