Moraya Gosavi Narayana Maharaj: Ganapati Bappa Morya
Moraya Gosavi Narayana Maharaj: Ganapati Bappa Morya
Very few know that <> chanted on the occasion of the Ganesh festival stands for Moraya Gosavi, one of the Bhakti saints whose devotion made Ganesh a household name. We often hear nowadays of Balgangadhar Tilak who popularized Ganesh festival in 19th century to embarrass the British by promoting cultural-nationalist gatherings. His attention was drawn partly by the fact that Chinchwad / Pimpri was the birth place of several Indian nationalists, such as the Chapekar brothers. It was also in Khidkee/ Pimpri that the British fought their last battle before taking control of India in 1818. But the real tradition of the popularity of the festival goes back to Moraya Gosavi, born c.1375 as a boon of Lord Ganesh to his parents. He installed at Chinchwad (Pune) one of the famous Idols (Swayambhu) of Lord Ganesh. He became popular because of his extreme simplicity and humility. In 1561, he took samadhi in a tomb at Chinchwad in Pune. Ganesh bhaktas believe that Morya baba listens to our prayers. Devotion to Ganesh was identified with devotion to Morya. Many other Maratha sages like Tukaram in his Abhangas endorsed Moraya Gosavi as one who merged with Ganapati. Incidentally, there are also contradictory components in the history of the rise of the Marathas under Shivaji: While Shivaji is known from his Rajyavyavaharakosha (Manual of Administration) that he made grants to Chinchwadkar Moraya Gosavi Narayan Maharaj and his Ganapati Temple, it was also by destroying treacherously the Mores of Javlli, allied with Adil Shah, that Shivaji could lay the foundations of his Swaraj. Shivaji certainly needed all assistance of Vigneshwar, Lord that removes all obstacles, to perform as he did.
P.S. Please correct the death /samadhi year of baba Moraya to 1461.
