Improving the mod_wsgi documentation.

which everyone is encouraging me to do, I have extracted and trimmed
slightly the build and installation notes from the README in the
source code and stuck them in a wiki document.
If interested parties could read it and provide feedback, will be most
appreciated.
The wiki document is:

I label it 'Quick' as it doesn't have all the additional detail which
is off in the installation issues document. It is still quite thorough
though.
Note that I don't want to be putting in this document stuff about how
to setup module loading in Apache for operating systems that have
modified how Apache people do it. For that would prefer it be put in
the installation notes document for that specific operating system.
In other words, would also look to improve:
http://code.google.com/p/modwsgi/wiki/InstallationOnLinux
Thus, if anyone can provide better information about package
repositories for the various Linux distributions, how to install
mod_wsgi from those repositories, how to setup Apache and then how to
restart Apache for those systems, that would also be much appreciated.
So, with a bit of motivation I can get into improving the
documentation, but there is stuff such as Linux specific stuff I don't
know that I need people to fill in the gaps.
Once we sort out generic installation and Linux installation, would
aim to have a go at a quick configuration guide.

I have found and can confirm that this is also necessary under CentOS,
*if* you are building mod_wsgi as a regular user, i.e., not logged in
as "root" or using "su -".
On Debian-based systems restarting Apache is usually done via:
sudo invoke-rc.d apache stop
sudo invoke-rc.d apache start
for Apache 1.x, for Apache 2.x change apache to apache2.
Doing:
sudo invoke-rc.d apache reload
may not do what you would think it should do in some versions of the
apache or apache2 init script.

If this is the case, you should also put in "exits" or "where to
proceed from here" links. Or task-specific links, what to do now, etc.

Can you give a list of Linux-specific stuff that you need to have
sorted out? Not so much "Linux" but the Linux Distributions are a
major source of problems as each one does its own thing and has its
own unique quirks that you need to be aware of.

I was planning on putting together a set of configuration file
templates over the weekend. Will post them here when finished.

To see which packages are available in RedHat, Centos and Fedora, if any, type:
$ yum list \*mod_wsgi\*
In RedHat you need first to install the EPEL repository package:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/FAQ#Using_EPEL
I could not find anything like EPEL for Centos. I guess one could use
the same repository package.
If the desired package is found it is possible to install it:
$ yum install package-name
As of today what exists is this:
Fedora 8: mod_wsgi 1.3
Fedora 9: mod_wsgi 2.1
RedHat EPEL: mod_wsgi 1.3 and 2.1
To be sure Apache is completely restarted:
# service httpd stop
# service httpd start

I have updated document based on feedback.
In relation to Linux specific instructions. What I would like are
separate documents for installation from prebuilt package repositories
for the major Linux distributions. Thus for Debian, Ubuntu,
RedHat/Fedora and SUSE, would like documents with the following
sections. If you can think of other sections that would be good to
have then suggest them.
- Package Repository
Details about that distributions package repository and specifically
the URL for mod_wsgi package. Preferably this should be a URL that
doesn't change over time if version of mod_wsgi available changes.
If steps are required to configure the system to point at the
repository, or other prerequisites must be satisfied, include that as
well.
- Package Installation
The commands needed to determine what version of mod_wsgi is available
from package repository and the commands needed to install the
package.
Should also detail any steps required if upgrading from an old package
if old package has to be removed first.
- Apache Configuration
What must be done to get the LoadModule line into the Apache
configuration files. Should give location of Apache files if they have
to be modified by hand, or the commands that may need to be run to
enable mod_wsgi support if configuration files come with package.
- Restarting Apache
The commands needed to be run to stop and then start Apache to get it
to load mod_wsgi after configuration has been changed.
- Apache Log Files
List where the Apache error log files are located if debugging is required.

Should be rewritten so that it points out that the user must
substitute some values as appropriate for their system. You never
know, someone might actually copy/paste the whole example and expect
it to work ;-) Even better, link the Apache configuration directives
to the online Apache documentation for the directive.
I still stand by my recommendation that example configurations and a
copy of the QuickConfigurationGuide should be included in the source
package and installed in /usr/share/doc/mod_wsgi during installation.
Probably just me, but habit tells me to look in the /usr/share/doc
directory *first* when man <program name> fails for me.

I don't like the idea of trying to install additional non required
files like that into arbitrary places as that location would not be
appropriate for most systems, only really Linux systems and only when
installing mod_wsgi into Apache in standard location.
Am not ignoring your suggestion entirely, instead am looking at having
an area in subversion repository for contributed sample configuration
and scripts. Can then refer to stuff there from wiki pages.
BTW, if you look in /usr/share/doc, I would say you are in a minority. :-)

You can make installation optional but enabled by default. Add
--without-docs option to configure? Packagers for distributions will
package the documentation anyway so I don't see what's the problem
with that. At least install something there, like the README file.

That would be my second suggestion. But what if you are somehow stuck
without Internet access, or if you're stuck with nothing but a small
device with an SSH connection to the server you are configuring? Don't
ask, happens to me all the time :-)

Probably. Everyone these days seems to be hardwired into looking for
stuff on Google first, readily available docs second. But like I said,
if there are no man pages for a particular package or program, then
the next logical place to look for documentation, at least under Linux
is the /usr/share/doc directory. The majority of Linux distributions
typically install some form of documentation under the /usr/share/doc.
At least Debian policy makes it clear and explicit.

I fail to see why I would be in a minority. I would hazard a guess
that this is the main reason why there are complaints that mod_wsgi
docs are "lacking". They're not lacking, it's just that the docs are
not in the 1st/2nd place that people would look.

From what I have seen, one of the first places people go is to an irc channel.
Problem is that many of the people on some irc channels are just as
clueless and usually give the wrong information. The people on the irc
channels seem to sometimes not even know the documentation does exist
as they hardly ever point people at it.
I am sure over time we will find the tight balance.
Now to get back to my side track task for this afternoon. :-)

I would look in /usr/local/share/doc/mod_wsgi...
For example my apache dos are in /usr/local/share/docs/apache22.
/usr/share/doc is for system (os) docs. Webservers and their modules
belong under /usr/local, where non system (not os) things go.
If anything the docs MAY be installed in a specified location if --
docdir is defined at configure time. But it certainly should NOT
install by default where it doesn't belong IMHO.

docs directory could be an install option for the packager. This is my

You can see that there is a modwsgi.conf file there and I don't
remember if it was me who placed it there or if it was the package
install who did. Anyway there is a problem with those files. The
modules are loaded in the file's alphabetical order so mod_wsgi will
be loaded before mod_python which is wrong. So I commented out
modwsgi.conf:
$ cat /etc/httpd/conf.d/modwsgi.conf
#LoadModule wsgi_module modules/mod_wsgi.so
And placed it in python.conf after loading mod_python:
$ cat /etc/httpd/conf.d/python.conf
LoadModule python_module modules/mod_python.so
LoadModule wsgi_module modules/mod_wsgi.so
Obviously if mod_python is not installed that problem does not exist.

The ordering of mod_python and mod_wsgi should only be a problem for
mod_wsgi 2.1 and older versions and old if the WSGIImportScript
directive is used.
If you know of any other problems arising from the order, then please
let me know so can address them.

I read that in a comment from an old config file. I now tried
reverting the order with mod_wsgi 1.3 and it worked. I guess the
comment was written in Fedora 5/6 where python did not use a shared
library.

I was talking about Linux distributions in general putting package
specific documentation in /usr/share/docs and I have pointed out that
Debian policy makes it explicit. Someone else has also pointed out
that the same is true for RedHat/Fedora/CentOS. I brought up FreeBSD
to point out that it also has a /usr/share/docs. I must admit that I
neglected to mention that packages installed via ports will install
package-specific docs in /usr/local/share/docs. But that's beside the
point. The point is, it is common practice to install package-specific
documentation *somewhere* on the local file system where it is readily
available. Internet connectivity notwithstanding.
It's also a non-issue where these documentations are installed since
you can change where they are installed by adding an option to
configure. Typically this would be --datadir but there is nothing
stopping you from adding a custom option to disable installation of
local docs entirely if you don't like it.

I guess you can count your self as lucky to have constant Internet
access and a full-blown browser/terminal on hand at all times.
Typically for packages that come with the distribution (again talking
about Linux) the first place you would look is in /usr/share/docs or
where ever it is your distribution installs local docs. Also the case
for online docs being always "more up to date" is false. Some software
packages auto-generate online docs from text files that come *with*
the package (Django being a case in point).

I think it all makes sense, now that you mention it. People would
usually find mod_wsgi because they are having issues running their
framework on mod_python or FastCGI. Typically, they are in a "tight
spot" and waiting around in a mailing list for answers is not an
option for them. Neither is sitting down and reading lengthy
documentation. So the best option for them is to ask about it on the
IRC channel for the framework they are using.
