Smart Meters and Public Health: Why Precaution is Warranted – Prof. Magda Havas

With Magda Havas, Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at Trent University (Ontario). For nearly two decades, Prof Havas has taught and studied the biological effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on students and teachers as well as on people struggling with diabetes, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and electrosensitivity. This conference will look at key research on the health effects of radiofrequency (RF ormicrowave) EMFs emitted by antennas and wireless devices. Prof Havas will explain why RFs from so-called ‘’smart’’ meters can sometimes be more damaging than low-level exposure to portable phone and cell tower radiation. In particular, she will demystify electrical hypersensitivity and explain why even healthy people have become severely disabled after smart meters were installed in and around their home. Finally, she will recommend ways of reducing exposure to various forms of EMFs, which are particularly noxious to vulnerable populations, such as children, pregnant women, the sick and the elderly.

Managing Hypersensitivity to Electromagnetic Fields in Clinical Practice – Dr Roy Fox - Saturday 25 May at 15:00
Dr Roy A. Fox MD, MES, FRCPC, is Professor of Geriatric Medicine, at Dalhousie University, and Medical Director, in Integrated Chronic Care Service (ICCS), Capital District Health Authority, Halifax Regional Municipal, Nova Scotia. For 20 years, ICCS – formerly the Nova Scotia Environmental Health Centre – has been helping patients with heightened sensitivity to the environment. The majority experience electrical hypersensitivity (EHS) which in some cases is their sole health complaint. While it appears to be caused by a combination of factors stressing the nervous system, electrosensitivity is defined by the reactivity to domestic (60-Hertz frequency) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) or to radiofrequency/microwave EMFs (between 3 kilohertz et 300 gigahertz). The onset or worsening of symptoms seems to depend on the degree of exposure to EMFs emitted by power lines, wired appliances, transmission towers and wireless devices such as mobile phones. The medical approach at ICCS is to look beyond the diagnosis to the whole person and through multidisciplinary assessment determine how health can be improved and reactivity reduced. The treatment includes education on environmental control, modifying and improving diet, adaptive pacing and exercise and various approaches to calm nervous system hyperreactivity related to EMFs. Most patients are treated without pharmaceutical products unless other diagnoses require medication.
