Minutes, May 19, 2009 Mobile Twin Cities
Attendance: 10
1. Breon Nagy, self-described hacker / mod-der, gave a presentation
on what cool things can be done with Android. He provided background
on Cupcake feature set, which includes video and soft keyboard.
Breon described Android's completely open shell, portable to many
devices, including netbooks, the Nokia tablet, and even feature
phones.
He described the open app structure, including paid applications.
Breon recommended http://www.cyrket.com/ in which the user can
search or filter apps by date, functionality, firmware version and
popularity.
Breon then demo'd "Useful Switchers" power manager, which allows a
proficient user to change the details of features like visual and
audio message notifications. Breon also mentioned home page
alternatives like Sweeterhome for a better look and feel. Check out
their website http://www.sweeterhome.com/ and these YouTube demo's by
Lemon (you'll see there are several videos by Lemon):

2. The group had scheduled a fishbowl style discussion of native vs
WORA, but agreed to defer this to a subsequent meeting with worse
weather+better attendance.
The group then proceeded to have a robust discussion of this topic
anyway, including:
-- pro's and con's of companies owning and controlling their own web-
based mobile applications
-- tension between trying to sell something as slick-looking as an
iPhone app, but having to ultimately develop a pan-mobile web app
anyway
-- will it all go open eventually? just the tools? or the apps too?
how does it all get monetized?
-- what will the cloud's impact ultimately be?
If you're interested in these topics, please join us in June for more
conversation!

Thank you Lisa for putting together the meeting notes for the last meeting
and BIG thank you to Breon for presenting and our sponsors (Codemorphic,
Refactr and Kwingo). Sorry to hear that the attendance was down and the
group was not able to do the fishbowl discussion. I'd really like to make
this happen at an upcoming meeting if possible. We can put it as "optional
based on attendance" for the next meeting? Here's the details on our next
meeting JUNE 16th.
1. Mark Jenkins will be presenting on "Identifying your customer".
2. If we have a large enough attendance we'll try and do the fishbowl
discussion otherwise, I (Justin Grammens) will plan to talk a little about
what took in from the Google I/O conference related to mobile.
3. We are always looking for presenters for an upcoming meeting. If you have
idea for a topic and/or would like to present, please contact me.
