Hi,

I had problems using the official binary of v1.14 and even v1.13 therefore I tried to compile using SonyE SDK.
I have now seen it to be working and the trail is actually getting made.
Im sharing a more-or-less stable r601 binary (along with my in-progress patches) just for all SE users to test if it works on their phones.
http://www.thevikas.com/mte-devel/

Tommi,
If the binary works then releases might also need a seperate SE binary henseforth. Me not good in java so i don't understand ANT compile process. What do you suggest?

Thanks,
Vikas

Hi Wolfram,

You could try the latest beta of 1.15. I'm not sure if there have been any changes to map rendering. I had the same problem with my old N80 device that it always run out of memory when OpenStreetMap was active. That could be caused by some buggy Java run-time implementation in older Symbian devices. The OpenStreetMaps are working excellent on my E71.

Tommi Laukkanen

Hi Tommi,
thanks for the 1.14. On my Nokia 3500c it's the first usable version
since 1.10.

All funktions I have tested so far ar working well:

- connect external GPS
- set waypoint
- "audio way point"
- record track
- all canvases are working well
- send SMS

One feature I cannot use is to show OpenStreetmap images as
background. As soon as I activate the setting I get an out of memory
exception. The only solution is to reinstall the application.

Is there a possibility to decide if it's a software bug or is there
really not enough memory available? Any idea?
I have not yet tested to create a tile cache offline.

Hi Vikas,

It would be nice to know what caused the v1.14 not to run on your SE device. Java applications should be compile once and run everywhere. I do test the releases on SE emulator before the official releases. Have you tried the latest v1.15 beta version build? Does it run as-is on your SE device?

Hi there.

As part of my ongoing struggle with my Sony Ericcson K530i I'd like to present my experiences.

- 1.13 beta - Works fine. Occasional crashes, but all main functionality is there.
- 1.13 final - Crashes on connect to Bluetooth. Unusable
- 1.14 beta - Crashes on connect to Bluetooth. Unusable
- 1.14 final - Can connect to Bluetooth. Seems to work but doesn't record any waypoints in the gpx or kml files.
- 1.15 beta - Can connect to Bluetooth. Seems to work but doesn't record any waypoints in the gpx or kml files.

As a result, with these last two, although the Lat and Long numbers change on the display, the Distance marker never increases beyond 0.0km.

Sadly, that is the exact same experience I had with my SE W810i.

I really like the new OSM surveyor (would be great if it was easily
customisable, though), but not beeing able to use MTE for so many
months, makes me look out for alternatives

Please! fix this.

Jim/Gerrit,

You could try the binary I made and just see if the distance counter moves.

I had also checked the 1.15beta and found the same problem.
The distance counter stays the same even on MockGPS mode while I see a speed been recorded.
There could be a slight possibility of bug for this behavior I guess.

Thanks,
Vikas

Btw, the New logo of MTE is great! Like a pro! :)

Installed this, but on first run it just says Invalid Application.

Back to 1.13beta for me.

Hello Plutocrat,

I have the same problem on my SE K800i. But I found it to happen only
after starting to record.

The reason I found was that the recording thread is blocked forever
after I start recording.
Strangely it is running fine on my Nokia and both Emulators (Sun WTK
and SE Emulator) but stops on the real phone !

Thus I modified the code MTE 15.5Beta (of today) in the following
method, were I detected the blocking code in:

public synchronized void setGpsPosition(GpsPosition pos) {
//
------------------------------------------------------------------
// If work has already been set - wait until we are
notified that it
// has been written
//
------------------------------------------------------------------
/* DirkFeist 12May09. Strange. On Nokia and Sim. this
works, but blocks my SonyE K880i
while (this.nextPositionToWrite !=
this.lastPositionWritten) {
try {
this.wait();
} catch (InterruptedException lInterEx) {
/ * Throw away and continue * /
}
}
*/
if (this.nextPositionToWrite != pos) {
nextPositionToWrite = pos;
}
//
------------------------------------------------------------------
// Notify everyone including the worker thread that there
is work
// to be completed
//
------------------------------------------------------------------
this.notifyAll();
}

I am not sure if this modification has side-effects, but now MTE
15Beta working fine on my SE K800i.
Could you please try this modification too?

If you want, I can send you via email my local generated jad/jar
files, for testing on your device, if it solves your problem too.

Bye
Dirk

I tried to apply the same changes but it didn't work for my w810.
Could you send you binary to me (or upload somewhere) to try it?

I accidentally obtaind a working binary without any change to the
source of versione 1.14 but just by configuring and running the "Debug
On-Device" function with Sony Ericsson SDK on NetBeans.
I don't know what is the magic in this binary (no obfuscation?
additional classes? different speed?) I tried different combinations
but this is the only one that worked for me.
If somebody is interested, it is available here:

I suppose the binary I shared was not good or not tested.
I will check and send the binary again today.
The binary was compiled by me and very basic therefore its without obfuscation,etc

My K790 is working great from that binary.

Hi all,

I just tested out yet another jar file to see if I could get it to work on my K530i. It seemed to be working initially, but I turned it off until I had a chance to test it outside. When I fired it up again, it crashed on startup - not even a startup screen appeared.

I deleted it and reinstalled my beloved 1.13beta, the only one which works on this phone so far ... however now that crashes on startup as well. Other java apps on the phone work OK so I think there must be something wrong with the application - maybe a corrupt config file or something -- but I'm guessing here.

I fiddled with the application permissions - set it to ask me before making a connection/altering files etc. When it started up this time it asked me if it could make a bluetooth connection, which it seemed happy doing. It asked me if it could read data from the phone, which I also approved, but this is where it seemed to crash out again.

So ... how can I get the phone back up and running. Is there a config file I can delete? How would I go about this, as the file manager I'm using Zeus, won't let me see any system files.

Or do I have to take it to SE and get it reformatted?

Sounds like a corrupt config file.
If you deleted it by the proper uninstallation process then that
should delete any RMS records, so the only files that would remain on
the system would be the MTEFileCache, assuming you were displaying
maps, and any saved gpx/kml files. The MTEFileCache does get read on
startup and might cause a problem if it got corrupted.
It is not a protected file and sits in the same directory as the gpx
files so if you can see them you should be able to see that too. Try
deleting that file or moving it, then restart.

Regards,
Gareth

Hello Vikas,

unfortunately your binarys don't work on my K800i. Can you please
list, what you have change in the source code? I assume that either
writing to RMS or the thread Notification is "buggy" on the real
phone, whereas it works fine on the simulator as well as on Nokia. (My
post before isn't really fixing the issue. Its not recording to RMS
anymore!)

Thanks

OK yes, I tried the uninstall, but that didn't help. I also tried deleting the MTEFileCache file, but that didn't do it. However renaming the whole Export directory and then creating a new one of the same name worked. Must have been some corrupt files in there as you say.

I'll re-try the other jar file now to see if I can break it again .... :-)

I'll try and installing the Vikas tonight and test it tomorrow. the
most annoing thing is that there is no errors when watching the output
from the device explorer, the app just hangs like there is a infiniti
loop.

One thing I noticed in this discussion was the problem getting the
program uninstalled and get a new fresh on installed. Since I started
using mobilTrailExplorer on my k750i I have never had the "choose
export folder" function on my phone therefore I had to make my own so
mobileTrailExplorer would save default to E:/ because C:/ was write
protected. I had this modified version running on my phone, while
installing version 15b (Tommi told me that he had change the default
export folder to e: in the official release) so I installed 15b it
then recorded something the first time, but for some reason it failed
saving. After that both my own modified version and the new 15b would
hang the moment I started recording (or in my case "would you like the
program write to file" yes "would you like to connect to a bluetooth
device" yes "would you like to write to file" yes and here it hangs,
can't get away from the menu... only option restart phone)... but
deleting the contence of my memory card would might help.

When I was trying out different versions, normally if I came across one which didn't work, I'd only have to uninstall it and then re-install the version which worked. I'd then go into settings and select the GPS Unit to use, and the Export Directory, and then everything was fine. (Settings weren't preserved between different versions.

On the one occasion where a bad version crashed my phone so badly that the working version wouldn't work either, deleting/renaming the export directory fixed it - must have been a corrrupt file in there or something.
