The question of literacy and short messaging, tweeting etc is one which continually seems to capture people's attention and interest.

 

With that in mind you might find this recent article of interest. It discusses the relationship between short form writing, particulary poetry from the work of the influential Roman poet, Martial, to the current art of Tweeting, and includes some discussion of the high regard for short form writing in a variety of cultures
