Mobile Applications Engineer, Social Innovations Lab

The Social Innovations Lab is a new initiative at One Economy to
create a better future by applying the capabilities of mobile phones
and other emerging platforms to social and economic development. It
will promote creation of new life tools that leverage our media for
public purposes ranging from disaster preparedness/response to pre-
natal health to anytime learning to government responsibility. One
Economy’s diverse staff and its many partnerships with technology
companies, universities and governments provide a singular environment
to create positive change.
Responsibilities and Oversight:
We seek a future-obsessed engineer to conceive and develop new mobile
public purpose applications for both use in our mission and to provide
examples to the global developer community.
Key responsibilities will be:
• Collaborate in the design, coding, testing and documentation of
applications on a variety of smart phone and feature phone platforms
that support One Economy’s mission.
• Continuously monitor and track the mobile device industry and
research community identifying device and application trends and other
significant carrier/network developments.
• Contribute to and support the public purpose applications community
activities of the Lab.
Requirements
The successful candidate will be a focused executer who can also shift
focus to the larger picture.
Essential
• 5+ years of software development experience, with at least 2 in a
mobile or handheld environment.
• Extensive application development experience on two or more of the
current predominant mobile platforms (Apple iPhone, Palm WebOS, Nokia
Symbian, Google Android, Qualcomm BREW, Sun Java Micro Edition, RIM
BlackBerry, Microsoft Windows Mobile).
• Great communication and collaboration skills. This position
requires you to work closely with a wide range of personalities and
roles and you’ll need to gel with all of them.
• Proven ability to quickly learn new skills.
• Organizational/time management skills: job requires working on
multiple concurrent projects and meet tight deadlines.
• Ability to work in fast paced environment; a positive and proactive
attitude.
• Bachelor’s degree
Desirable skills
• Superior brainstorming capability and intense curiosity and
playfulness, with great ability to see connections and possibilities.
• Ability to discover the most important requirements – and then
execute on them.
• Foreign language skills and experience working internationally and/
or in emerging markets.
Location
This position will be located at our Portland, OR office.
Term
The position is available for one year. Conversion to a regular
position beyond the term is a possibility, subject to performance and
funding.
