(YEA! MN). This is a part-time volunteer position, Dec - June, with
potential compensation available through pending grant funding.

TITLE: YEA! MN Youth Coordinator
CONTRACT DATES: December 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010
TIME COMMITMENT: 10-20 hours/week
LOCATION: Mobile. Will Steger Foundation/Alliance for Sustainability
office (as needed)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Youth Environmental Activists Minnesota (YEA! MN) is a network of
youth leaders and environmental clubs from high schools across the
Twin Cities Metro area working together to create a more sustainable
world. The group is sponsored by the Alliance for Sustainability and
Will Steger Foundation.
YEA! MN organizational structure includes a youth steering committee
with representatives from 6+ different high schools, including 3
student chairs. The steering committee is in the second year of the
‘Clean Communities Campaign’, empowering youth climate leadership at
home, school, and in the community, both locally and statewide. The
youth steering committee also plans and facilitates 4 large meetings,
open to students across the metro area, over the course of the school
year, providing climate change education, organizing skills, and other
valuable tools and resources for action to support student leadership
teams at participating high schools.
YEA! MN outreach includes public and private high schools across the
metro area. Student captains have been nominated for each of the 4
regions of the Twin Cities metro, to actively recruit and network with
area high schools, and collaborate around shared campaigns and
community projects.
YEA! MN partnerships include the Sierra Club, MN Schools Cutting
Carbon, TEAM MN, YES! MN, 1Sky, and the MN Energy Challenge, among
others.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Support student leaders from 12-20 metro area high school
environmental clubs in expanding and sustaining their leadership
teams, and planning hands-on energy conservation, energy efficiency
and renewable energy projects and/or other related projects.
• Support students teams as they strive to carry out projects for MN
Schools Cutting Carbon (
http://www.schoolscuttingcarbon.org)
• Build regional clusters of high school environmental clubs in the
North, South, East and West metro and support student collaboration
across schools to carry out local and community-wide action plans
• Provide direct mentorship for the YEA! MN student chairs, youth
steering committee and regional outreach captains, including
leadership development and resource access
• Develop the YEA! MN member database and tracking system as well as
social networking and outreach in partnership with student leaders
• Work collaboratively with other adult mentors at specific schools
and in specific metro areas as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Previous experience working with junior high/high school youth
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Experience with group facilitation
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage logistics as
needed
• Background/interest in youth climate leadership, environmental
activism, and/or activism in general
• Basic computer skills and comfort with social networking tools
(Facebook, google groups/docs, etc)
• Reliable means of transportation throughout Twin Cities metro area
• Availability for youth meetings in the afternoon and evenings
COMPENSATION:
The YEA! MN Coordinator would begin as a volunteer position with
possible compensation beginning in December through pending grant
funding.
