I have a few Apps which are quite slow on 3G iphone eg Papers which is
quite slow with the pdf files of scientific papers and their
navigation. Another is the specialist medical application Interpath
Free which is used to view images up to 1GB in size produced by Aperio
scanners by using streaming of panes rather like Seadragon by microsoft.

Anyone got the 3G S - is it worth upgrading for the speed increase?
Anyone with one like to try Interpath Free and see if zooming and
moving (usual methods) are useable?

The speed increases are noticable all over. Not sure about the apps
you mention but Pocket God, which typically took 10-15secs to load now
takes about 5.
If speed is your only reason to upgrade, it may not be worth the cost,
depending what you have now. For me, going from an 8GB 2G to 32GB 3GS
is a massive upgrade and well worth it in my eyes. It has to do me for
the next 2 years!

It seems usable, if a bit sluggish. Seadragon is much faster, and
doesn't have the annoying lag in filling in white areas on the screen
when scrolling.

Generally, the 3G S seems faster all round, though it does depend on
the app. I've gone from the 3G to the 3G S, so I probably benefit less
than Dom. Nonetheless, Safari render speeds are noticeably better, as
is general responsiveness using the camera, moving between apps,
unlocking, etc.

Value for money? For heavy users I'd say definitely yes. Of course it
depends how long you have to go on your contract.. I decided it was
best to buy the Pay and Go version, swap in my contract SIM, and sell
the 3G. They've held their value well (the 8GB 3G Pay and Go still
costs £350 new) and so that subsidises the new purchase considerably.
This way I also get to be well clear of minimum contract next summer
when Apple release their next version(s) of iPhone..

Thanks for that Dom & Robert. It doesn't seem as if the 3G S is a lot
better for Interpath. It's probably the program - the full useable app
is £99 so not exactly an impulse buy! I wonder if its the most
expensive thing on the app store.

I wondered about going the same route as you and getting PAYG and
selling the 8g 3G. When you sell the old phone and give buyer the PAYG
sim that comes with it does that allow them to have the 12 months free
web & wifi? If so that's worth £120 and as I was thinking of selling
for about 1/2 new price it would be a bargain for someone.

I'd be interested in your phone if you're selling, Bill. I'm now a
bit wary of GPRS instead of wifi, because on my phone on PAYG you're
charged access per day, and having spent some time fiddling and
talking to the Vfone shop in Solihull, it goes to GPRS first even if
you're in a Wifi area (which I am at home normally). The only way I've
found of stopping it is to put gibberish in the password details for
3G access, because just deleting APN details didn't work. What a
burden it is to be Aberdonian......

That's a bit backward. The iPhone, thankfully, uses WiFi whenever it's available.

I checked this with O2 and it seems to be fine to do that. According to their T&C I have to phone customer service and tell them I'm transferring it to someone else, then they have to call to confirm the transfer.

I've got a buyer for my 3G, but he doesn't need the PAYG SIM (he's just replacing a broken iPhone). If anyone needs it, with the 12 months free data/wifi and £10 of call credit (if you're buying an iPhone but don't have the SIM) then I'm sure we can do a deal.

'fraid it's already gone to another MMUGer.
