Ho - hum. I've just done this update and now FCE won't open. It says
I need an AGP Graphics card, which, of course, I don't have and didn't
need before. Strangely, the FCE icon in the dock is no longer the
Clapper board but the generic 'Applications' symbol - the ruler,
pencil and paintbrush in the shape of an 'A'. Any help, as per usual,
greatly appreciated! (About this Mac says I've got, as usual, an ATI
Radeon X1600 graphics card, which appears to be working normally)

Was the update a bugfix (via software update) or a complete new version?

If the FCE icon in the apps folder is also broken I'd consider doing a reinstall after trying a restart.
The Apple discussions for FCE may be worth a search too.

If its a new version check the system requirements.

Thank you, Drew, but it appears to be just a glitch, as the two most
recent back-ups were the same, and one of them had the 'No entry' sign
as well. I backed up (from Time Machine) the most recent good copy
and all seems fine. I think some Cybernetic Leprechauns come and play
at night - either that or Max (the dog) is training to be an Apple
Support engineer...... Btw the update was via Software Update but is
unrelated - the duff back-ups were done before the updates were
installed.

Well, after much head-scratching and picking of brains (Chris Roberts'
mostly, for which much thanks), I went to Apple Touchwood to try to
get to the bottom of the problem. Usual efficient and courteous
service, first from Ashley, then Chris, and here's what we found. 1)
Upgrading to Snow Leopard disables Soundtrack as supplied in FCE 3.
2) The upgrade from FCE 3 to FCE 4 does not include an upgrade for
Soundtrack, only LiveType. 3) It is, apparently, possible to install
an upgrade from a disc and get all the right cues from the windows and
for the screen to say "The Installation was successful", and for the
install not to 'take'. You only know for sure if you go to the 'Get
info' pane to verify. As if life wasn't boring enough already.....
That was the reason I was getting the AGP card warning - I was still
actually on FCE 3 with Snow Leopard.

Glad you got it sorted Alasdair. An thanks for keeping us updated on
your solution. Very interesting.

Chris
