I just wondered if anyone has advice on getting a SIM only pay as u go card in France, for example, just by changing the SIM over. Will it work, or will I have to resort to jailbreaking first? My 3GS is on 02
Thanks
Jack

If you bought your iPhone with a contract, then its likely your handset is locked to the carrier. You can always test this with a friend's sim card from a non-O2 provider. Pop it in and if it works, then you're golden and shouldn't have issues.

If not, then you will have to resort to jailbreaking (although not possible with 4.0.2 unless you downgrade the OS to 4.0.1 or lower). Even then, check the status of the unlock, as Jailbreaking does not equal carrier unlocking.

The alternative to the "illegal"/unsupported method is to call O2 and ask them. They may charge you a fee but can push out a bit to the Apple systems to unlock your handset, as is required by law.

It depends on how long you've been with O2 I think.
I got O2 to unlock my 3G before I sold it and I think you can do it yourself on the O2 website but they do say it can take up to 14 days (I think) for it to unlock. My first request was unsuccessful until o nagged the he'll out of them. I thought it might have been a ploy to extend my contract.

I know they will not entertain unlocking the iPhone 4 yet so if your 3GS is a new one then you may have to look at jailbreaking - yuk!

O2 unlocked my 3GS in about 4 days. No problems.

Can someone please tell me what the terms "jailbreaking" and
"unlocking" mean , how they differ and why it's sometimes illegal and
sometimes not? (I assume any illegality is purely in terms of the
contract with the carrier or Apple?)

Jailbreaking is related to the iPhone OS. A Jailbroken phone enables you to install non Apple approved applications (with the risk of viruses etc). Don't ask me how as I would be scared of screwing my iPhone up but that's me.

Unlocking relates to the network provider ie it prevents you from using a SIM from an alternative network provider. It doesn't change anything else within your iPhone experience.

Unlock -
Add the ability to use the phone on another network. Phone providers can unlock legally for you, but you usually need to have had the phone or contract for a certain period & possibly pay a fee.
Unlocked phones are still 100% legit in Apple's eyes for warranty & support etc.

Jailbreak -
Gain access to the software to allow you to do what you want to it. eg Install apps that Apple doesn't sell in the store or modify features that iOS doesn't support.
Jail breaking can allow you enough access to perform the unlocking step. You can also circumvent the DRM in apps to be able to pirate them (hence the bad reputation of jail breaking).
Jail breaking isn't illegal (at least according to US law, & I doubt the EU would allow it) but it relies on exploiting security flaws to forcibly upgrade a users access permissions. Apple won't support a jail broken device & will insist you restore it before it gets any support etc.
There is a potential risk that the jailbreak process could do whatever else it wants to you phone, such as steal all your contacts & calendars.

I wonder if the confusion arose from the early days of the iPhone
(like when I got mine) and the only way to NOT have the Apple contract
and a hefty monthly bill was to jailbreak the phone. I suppose now
that it's easier to swap networks (ie unlock) you wouldn't need to
jailbreak?

Ok this worked fine but o2 refused as I only got my 3GS upgrade in March and they want you to stay with the phone a whole 12 months. You may have had an iphone O2 contract for years, but it's how long you have the device that counts. So I have done the My Europe bolt-on thing -£10 for 30dd. You get incoming for free and outgoing calls reduced from 30p to 24p/min. Texts are free in your allowance but 1 txt = 4 off the allowance. This is nothing new but It's probably just about worth it.
Thanks again

Thank you all for that clarification, it's very helpful. Does that
mean I can upgrade my 1st gen. 8gb model to OS3 with impunity, and it
will still work on Orange PAYG?

Somewhere I think I have an app that enables me to record audio that is on the iMac speaker, in this case from iPlayer, but can not find it. Please, what is it called?

Take a look at Audio Hijack Pro and Wiretap.

Not sure it there are any free ones, macupdate.com may list some since that versiontracker.com is now gone :(
