I'm getting a lot of 'spam' mail for mac tune up software. According to the ads it's supposed to speed up your Mac and do all sorts of wonderful things.

Has anyone ever used this type of software, and did it make much difference?

It can do.

I use a piece of software called Onyx from time to time, to help clear out system caches. This can sometimes fix issues with applications loading, or odd behaviour.
Most of these Tune Up software do the same things as Onyx does, as well as other features like producing graphs of your disk usage (to help find big files to free up space), clearing Internet caches, and repairing disk permissions and disks, as Disk Utility does.

I would steer clear of any software that says it does disk defragmentation as well, especially if you have an SSD. It will only harm your system more.

Yep, Onyx is good. It tends make things run a little bit faster. Just make sure you run it in your admin account, otherwise you'll end up like me, staring at it for ages wondering why it's not doing anything...

I wouldn't necessarily trust any product that advertises via spam though. Onyx seems to be trustworthy.

'Tune up' is the iTunes tag fixer. It's legit software, but feels like a franken-monster hybrid to me (it attaches itself to iTunes windows in a weird way).

'Tune up' is also used a lot as a strap line in 'Mac Keeper' aka 'Mac Cleaner' adverts that pop up everywhere. It is supposedly legit, but it feels malicious due to their use of invasive advertising. It seems they market it by setting up many sites with 'reviews' with nice disclosures featuring …
This website abides by word of mouth marketing standards.

They are basically trying to get page rank in search engines whilst they are bombarding Mac software sites with their adverts.
It popped up around the time of the 'Mac Defender' fake security trojan (which is malicious). So they both seem dirty to me :)

It's a shame OnyX won't get into the App Store, it could do with the credibility of being vetted by Apple.
