I have been asked to edit some material on a DVD. It was originally a
film to DVD transfer and plays quite happily in DVD Player on my G5
but I can not get the information off in a form acceptable to FCE or
iMovie. It looks a standard DVD disc, see attachment.
Any help appreciated.

VIDEO_TS are typical of normal DVD's. Handbrake should get that off (http://handbrake.fr/)
Is there anything in the other folder?

Thanks Don,
These are the contents of the other folder.

How big are the files? They are possibly just left overs from some proprietary dvd format.

I swear I sent a message to this thread earlier, but no sign of it yet :)

Graham, if you use Handbrake you will end up with an mpeg4 or similar file. It will not be close to the quality of DV PAL, or even the mpeg2 files on the disk.
Try MPEG Streamclip. It should allow you to export to DV PAL (File > Export to DV). There may be a flaw in my plan, but its worth trying as you will get better results & easier editing going via MPEG Streamclip.
The flaw is that you won't have the Quicktime MPEG2 Playback component (that comes with Final Cut Studio / DVD Studio Pro). So when you open it MPEG Streamclip it will not show you the files, but try exporting it to DV PAL.

Select the option to prepare for iMovie if you plan on editing in there, since it creates the correct files for less rendering.
I think it will work, if not I can probably convert it for you to DV PAL?

Hi Graham,
You need to use MPEG Streamclip (MPSC) to convert to DV PAL (or whatever you want to edit as) then you will need to convert back to MPEG 2 to stick it back onto DVD. If you are you planning on using iDVD, just import the edited DV PAL file.

I'm not sure if you will be able to view the contents in the mpeg streamclip editor window since you need the 'QuickTime MPEG2 Playback' component to view the demuxed VOB files. But try doing a 'File > Export to DV' it may work for you without the playback component !

There are other Apps that do DVD conversion (Handbreak) but be careful that they don't only do MPEG 4 exports (ickky quality compared to editing DV).

PS if the DVD is copy protected, you can dupe it without protection via 'Mac the Ripper' (google it) then convert via MPSC, but then you should already know thats theft without the owners consent :-)

I'm now wondering if ffmpegx will do anything. I think it will convert the .vob files ino whatever format you ask for.

Hi Dom and Recco,

It looks as though you two have been burning the midnight oil on my problem while I was tucked up in bed. Many thanks. I downloaded Handbrake last night, imported the DVD into iMovie, and exported it as a Quicktime mp4 file which should work.
To put some flesh on the bones, a friend of mine who is quite IT savvy had had a transfer of old 8mm film onto DVD which he wanted to edit the crap out of but couldn't. He suggested that as the Mac could do everything perhaps I can help The original quality is awful, and I ran the DVD  alongside the QT and both are equally bad so that is no problem.
Thanks again
Graham

Visualhub is pretty good for doing this sort of thing.  I use it all the time to convert media to DV(there is a prepare for Final Cut option).  You have to pay for it though(from Techspansion). (http://visualhub.net).  There is a free version which is mainly for ipod stuff, but I'm not sure if it does DV

The free Visualhub one will do 2 minutes for free. I have been meaning to buy it since it is better (easier, prettier, & usable) than ffmpeg-x for creating .flv.

Glad you got it done Graham :)

Very good value for money(<£15).  And it does what it says on the tin, although the Xgrid option is broken in Leopard in the current version.  They update it fairly regularly too.  I don't have one, but apparently it will use an Elgato turbo as well - handy if you transcribe a lot of stuff for ipod/phone
