Broadband Channel ?

I have Netgear router for my PowerPc and Mac-book wireless connection
to the internet.
Until last week I had no problem (3 year on) internet and mail was
working OK.
Last week the problem started. Connection was lost often. I had to
reset the router for factory setting, switching on and off
etc. etc. to have a connection. I also noticed that a new name had
arrived on the diagnosis : a neighbour's name under the Netgear.
This could be unrelated. But I have been told that this problem is
common in the cities (I live in the countryside) where several people
using the
same CHANNEL for the router. On PC I was told that they have a
program that they could change the Channel(there are 12 Channels only).
Is there similar system for Apple Mac. Where is the Channel on mac to
change for better connection.
Any suggestion , Please.

There are 2 thing to do.

1. Find out what channels are around you. 

Use istumbler to see the channels for any other wifi networks. Compare it to your own wifi network's channel. It helps to be 'in between' any other channels in use.

2. Set your Netgear router to use another channel.

Just login to the router's admin page in your browser, and find the wifi network settings & change the channel. Check the router manual or online support for more info. The Netgear's admin address is 192.168.0.1 by default.

The istumber is now showing that me and a neighbour are both using the same channel.

I have also discovered that I have two chnnels to play with  1 and 6

I can change it to any of them .Its much better now

In the UK, channels 1-11 are used for Wifi. The channels actually overlap so and there are 3 distinct channels you can use, 1, 6 and 11.
Its best to chose the one furthest from your neighbours. So if they are both on 1, use 11. That will give you the best wifi strength.
