It had to happen. My beloved iPod seems to be dead.

Last night I plugged it into my Macbook to add some music but iTunes
said it had to be 'Restored' but singularly failed to be able to do
this. It kept report a differing error number. I've read this,
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1372 but it was of no help.

I've tried erasing the disk on the iPod using disk utility, this didn't
work.

So, any ideas of things to try or is my iPod dead?

PS.

It's a black and white screen with click wheel model.

Probably time to find a shoe box and dig a hole in the garden. Since its probably 6ish years old, the hard has most likely failed, and I doubt the battery has much life in it either. You could replace both yourself but the expense isn't worth it. Go get a nano and you'll pay less and get more.

But seriously, take it back to Apple for recycling (they have to take it) and you may get a discount on a new one (that used to the the case anyway).

I would like to say that I have a 2003 3rd gen 20GB scroll wheel iPod that still just about works.
