The curse of Ipad is now upon me. My Tiger would not respond to Ipad
and I have to
upgrade to Leopard(or any 10.5 OSX). I now have two sets of Leopard
discs : a DVD double sided which is
rejected by my iMac G5 and two cds . But no instruction how to use
them to upgrade.
It looks as if I have to use a bootable external memory disc or HD to
instal the Leopard
discs on my Hardisc.
Has any one have the instruction for how to upgrade from Tiger to
leopard
and would like to share it please. Many thanks
Javad

Hi Javad

You should be able to start up from the DVD. If that's not being recognised by the iMac then you're not going to get far in the process. I'm not sure what the other CDs are, sounds like you may have been sold/given a copy of something not 100% legitimate.

The normal process is this
Insert Install DVD
Either double click on the installer icon or restart your iMac holding down the C key
iMac Boots from the DVD
Installer runs
You choose your install option (I'd go for Archive and Install)
Click install and wait for an hour or so while new system is installed and your files are moved around.
iMac restarts
You're using 10.5
Run updates to 10.5.8
Plug in iPad

Cheers
B.

Remember that Snow Leopard will not work on a PPC Mac. Have you got the right version(the non frozen version 10.5)?

Hi Javad,
I have the same problem as you - both my iMac G5 and PowerBook G4 were
happily running 10.4.11 and I was shocked that the iPad couldn't
function with them (so I know what you mean by 'curse'!). Luckily we
had a PC in the house running XP which had iTunes on it so I have got
the iPad going and so far I have not needed to update it, but
ultimately I know I will need OS 10.5.8 so that I can access my Mac
related stuff. I managed to buy a genuine retail DVD of 10.5.1 on eBay
for £64 and that has installed perfectly well on my iMacG5 so I think
your problem may be related to whether you have the correct Apple
software. I simply inserted it and I could read the 'before you
install' advice as well as 'Welcome to Leopard'. It said at first that
it would take 4 hours to install but in fact I think it was less than
one (I went away and it was done when I came back..) One of the
warnings was about a possible need to update firmware but so far that
has not arisen so I'm hoping that it did not apply to me. I'm not sure
what version I will get when the update has finished - I'll let you
know.

Hi Javad,
Just to say the obvious - make sure you have backed up before you
install! You never know what might happen. For me that was more of a
problem as I inadvertently allowed SuperDuper to overwrite my existing
backups and stored videos on the iomega external disk I have, so i had
to start again and that DID take several hours! Now have partitioned
the disk so that I can keep my videos safe.

Just checked the update and YESSSSSSS I automatically got upgraded to
10.5.8 so now I'm in business for my iPad. (I can't install Snow
Leopard of course because none of my Macs are Intel- based.)

Good luck picking up a genuine 10.5 Install DVD - they are selling
like hot cakes on eBay!! I realise I should have got a multiple
install (Family) one now, but I think I can survive with Tiger on my
PowerBook and Leopard on my iMac G5.

Hi Tilly,
many thanks for your detail and informative email. I believe now that
I have
a wrong software to install. The double sided DVD was not recognised
and the two c.d.
do not relate to any procedures.
I started my iPad off by taking it to the apple Store in Solihull.
Now I need to access my slide shows and photos
on my iMAC G5 for my presentations. iPad request OSX 10.5 for this
operation.
I am going to purchase another 10.5 but this time make sure it would
be compatible with iMAC G5
Thank you again for your email.
Best regards
Javad
