just bought the above machine, and am having boot problems.

I have attempted to satrt it from both my 'panther' and os 9.2.2. discs with no effect.

the 'error' messages I get :

bootr, unknown word
Failed to boot
Apple iMac Open Firmware 3.0 f3 built on 12/02/98 at 10:45:41

I have typed 'boot' at the 0> prompt to no effect.

couldn't find anything here, nor here:

I do not have the original, relevant discs (i only paid $30 for the machine!!).

When the initial boot up sequence fired up, the norton software was telling me that there was a corrupt sector on the harddrive, I was hoping that a clean install with a 'newer' os would help rectify the blemish....

any ideas please... a box of moose droppings to anyone who get get this piece of artwork working.

cheers!!

Dek,

9.2.2 probably needs a firmware update to run on that mac (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/g3/).
Does the Norton Disk boot? What is it's OS version? Does the HD mount when booted from Norton?
You could try a drag install of the Norton system folder, onto the internal disk (I think it was possible to install OS 9 via drag installing a working system). I would copy everything from the Norton Disk
because I can't remember what was needed :-).
You'll need to 'bless' the dragged system to make it bootable I think it involved selecting it in the Startup Disk control panel (google 'how to bless os9').
The Norton disk will likely contain a reduced OS so it will be missing loads of stuff.

Otherwise you might be able to make a copy of the Norton disk (on a working mac) & add the firmware updater to the disk, then you'll need to pray the updater will run from the copy (very unlikely from a CD but might work if the disk is a firewire drive eg writable).

Your safest bet is to find early OS 9 discs then add the firmware & then the Apple updates (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1387). You probably dont need to go upto 9.2.2 since that has fixex for running in classic via OSX.

Sheeesh, check out these dialog box fonts http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2561 :)

Thanks Drew,

will try these this weekend.

I have no original discs, and the 9.2.2 came with my G4 imac!!

the hd mounts, and norton looks as though it's set to run on boot up.
