Lots of my contacts are couples and I'm asking if anyone knows how
to put two birthdays on one card. Otherwise I can see me ending up
with three cards - one for each individual, and one as a couple for
Christmas, say. (I'm glad I haven't got one offspring with 6
grandchildren..... ) Can anyone suggest a solution without too much
gobble-geekery, please?

That still means individual cards for each, Ben. What I really want
is the "+" and "-" signs for 'Birthday' category, like you can add a
phone number or e-mail, so that it puts a reminder in iCal, too. Btw,
what do you want for your birthday, Ben? And the rest of the family?
(Dates required)

Choose Preferences form the Address Book menu
Click on the Template tab
From the Add Field drop down choose Dates
A new date line will appear initially called Anniversary
Click on the name and choose custom, you can then call it Birthday 2, Birthday 3 and so on.

Only problem is who is birthday one and who is birthday 2?

Were you being funny?  Instead of 'Birthday 1' and 'Birthday 2' how about putting the persons name?  Not sure if you were joking!

To make the Anniversary field say "Fred Bloggs" you would need to create that in the preferences as a unique field - what a mess, it also doesn't show the anniversaries iCal.

It seems like you have a unique idea of what a person is. One person has one birthday, and one Address Book card is one person (or company).
Use groups as Ben mentioned to create families. Hold 'alt' to see what groups a card belongs to.
It really is easier to use the freaking system as it was intended! :^)

Will you be sending her a card on both days?

Better not send it to HRH - on either day!
