Defrag isn't necessary as the OS does that itself. There are 3rd party
tools that do that, Disk Keeper and Disk Warrior are some.
It's always good to keep about 10-15% of your hard drive empty to help
the OS manage itself.
Open Disk Utility (Find it with Spotlight) and do a Repair
Permissions. This can help a bit.
If you fancy the hardware route, more RAM can help, and if you're
prepared for the cost and effort, you could investigate SSD drives.
Is there anything in particular that is going slow? If it's a new Mac,
you shouldn't really have many problems.
A clean install of your current OS is also useful but time consuming
as you need to backup your existing files and applications, format
your drive, reinstall the OS then reinstall your apps and restore your
data. I did this recently and I still come across stuff I've missed,
but it brought new life to my aging (2.5yr old) Macbook Pro.
