Hi all,

We met with Faaig, NCIT, this Thursday and briefly discussed about the
IT standards and the large scale deployment of open source in the GOM.
In this meeting it was highlighted that an IT Assessment of GOM is
needed in order for any practical analysis. So NCIT is inviting MOSS
in the consultancy and support of this assessment. All necessary help,
including obtaining release permission for those in the civil service
and access rights to perform the assessment will be facilitated by
NCIT. In addition staff from NCIT will be tied with us and work with
us. For now we plan this would be an automated IT assessment using OCS
Inventory NG (http://www.ocsinventory-ng.org/)

So we are calling for volunteers who will take part in this
assignment! The more, the sooner we will be able to finish this.

= Also note all volunteers will be paid a consultancy/support
remuneration! =

So if you are interested and can devote 2 - 3 weeks, full time, send
an email to: ibrahi...@gmail.com, with your contact details right
now! :)

Immediate action is required as we are planning on a collective
training/research session before we go about on the field!!! :)

Salam

Hi again!

We still need 5 more volunteers for the GOM IT Assessment (GIA)
Project.

So if you have the time and interest, send and email with your contact
details and interest to ibrahi...@gmail.com with subject "GIA
Project"

Before anyone volunteers, you should ask yourself why you should be
undertaking any work for which NCIT staff are being paid. Even if you
do get a 'remuneration' for the work, it will not be an amount to
which you are really entitled (I'm sure). What's more, you will be
guaranteeing the job security of people like Faiq by doing their work
for them, and should the project go asunder it will be you who bears
the blame.

I implore you to not be naive in your free/open-source software
advocacy.

Dosbe,

Again I have to differ! What are you trying to do? Nothing? Is that
the way you advice us to take part in the development of our country?

NCIT is calling for help from us (which mean they admit that they are
unable to do it, for whatever reason), and I think for the good of the
IT industry we should offer our help when we can. As for the job
security of Faaig, I think it is not in our hands and best interest,
we are not politicians. Plus our reluctance to help do come at a cost.
This is our chance to prove that we have capable IT staff who do get
things done. It is all about getting things done and regain the faith
that has been long lost of our IT staff.

Said that, I do agree that there are risks, that we need to plan for
and handle. This can only be done if we stick together and sing the
same song. So let us leave our frustrations and negativity, and look
optimistic and realistic, and see if we can do this. If we can, let us
do it pragmatically. People elsewhere in the world are doing it, so I
don't see why we can't but I am only one person! As for the blame
part, it will only be a result of our inefficiency which we can always
admit, rather acting spineless!

But on the other hand, if we are too naive, under-skilled and afraid,
scared pussies, that is a whole different story...

Talk is cheap, and action speaks louder than words.

Dosbe, with your infinite wisdom if you love to criticize, why don't
you direct them in helping us in identifying possible mistakes,
pitfalls and things to look for, rather than dissuading.

Shunan,

It sounds like you really are the 'heart' of MOSS (contrary to your
previous assertions). In fact, it's almost as if you're a prophet
amongst evil-doers, bringing unto them a divine 'faith'. Unfortunately
you have serious flaws in your faith.

Helping the government in their hour of need does not do anything 'for
the good of the INDUSTRY'. Even a ten-year-old can tell the difference
between industry and government. Suppose you do help the government
anyway (not particularly in an 'industrial' context) and that they
paid you at professional rates. Then the government is doubling its
expenditure on that particular project, since they already have the
personnel on their payroll. Oops, it looks like MOSS cannot help
reduce any costs there. Now suppose you do it for free. Then the
government can simply lay off all their IT personnel and contract MOSS
for all their projects. That would do wonders to curb the budgetary
expenses (who cares about what happens to the IT personnel who spent
and slaved on their degrees and masters and what-not).

I know you're going to emphasize NCIT's inability to be objective in
their government-wide IT assessments (or whatever other projects you
intend to exploit MOSS for). This is not an excuse. NCIT has more than
enough personnel to take on the job, and if they want their
assessments to be verified for objectivity they should contract a
professional organization (not one being led by someone who can't tell
the difference between industry and government).

One more thing. Your sermonic attempts at preaching has always been
more corny than clever. Disjointed statements like 'action speaks
louder than words' and 'sing the same song' is probably the butt of
the joke in here. It might be a good idea to tone down on these.

Cheers!

I guess you get confused in the meaning of the words 'I' and 'we'! I use them very carefully! I am offering my help to MOSS with years of experience in risk taking and practicality. Not on theory, but based on what and how things works! As for me things look as simple as common sense, but it seems for you it look like miracles. So for the prophet part, "Dosbe, Let my people free!" :)

Dude, it is not the GOM do not have IT personnel, it is that there are people like you who do nothing, finish nothing but talk endlessly that bring no fruit! This is sad but true and a crippling factor of the industry!

Time is of essence here! We all know Government bureaucracy is a slow mover and speeding things up, in the long run, is more profitable even when it involves extra expenses. If you have not understood why MOSS is offering a helping hand in this, I guess you will never understand. Why don't you grab your remote, tune into premier league and be content!

Point well taken!
