Subject: Teachers' Internet Use Guide

The Teachers' Internet Use Guide is a web-based training module that was
developed through funding from the Texas STAR Center (Region VIII
Comprehensive Center - http://www.starcenter.org). It walks teachers
through the process of designing standards-based lessons that use the
Internet.

In preparation for our upcoming presentation at TechQuest in San Antonio on
March 6th, we've improved the site in two ways:

(1) slimmed down the "assessment" section and made it much more
user-friendly; and

(2) added a downloadable PowerPoint version of the User's Manual that we
use in training workshops.

We hope this will facilitate your use of this free, totally sharable
website in your staff development sessions.

We have a monthly contest and a prize for each "lesson of the month". We
hope you and your fellow teachers will contribute some lessons to our
sharable lesson plan bank. Naturally, the intellectual rights to all
lessons remain with the author.

We also have a new "sister" website titled EETNET (Excellence and Equity in
Networking), also funded by the STAR Center. It helps technology teams
write a tech plan so they can apply for the E-Rate and other grants that
can introduce technology into their schools and districts.

These resources are available on the RMC Denver website
(http://www.rmcdenver.com). Simply scoll down the left hand side of the
screen to the last entry ("Instructional Technology") and you will see
links to both websites.

Do you want your students to have an appreciation of modern Art? Well this
is one site you may want to direct them to. Such topics include: Dynamic
Movements (Impression through Conceptual Art), Celebrated Artists
(Biographies of the Legends - including Warhol, Picasso, Dali etc.), Chef
D'oeuvre (Virtual Art Gallery and analysis), and Interactive network
(beyond conventional web sites). Each link brings more information and
graphics for the student to use to research their favorites.

This site could be used during a study of the history of Art and it could
also be used as a contrast with Art in the ancient times (pictographs etc.)
The grade 7's might enjoy doing a comparison with the Egyptian Art they
study in Social Studies.

The Modern Masterworks site is hosted by Thinkquest and is suitable for
Art/ Fine Arts students in grades 3-12 and is located at:

"PRINCESS AMERICA" SETS SAIL FOR 1999

The Princess America Project sails into 1999 with a visit to the National
Research Center for Cephalopods in Galveston, Texas (that's squid and
octopus for you and me). Join us as we take a look at these curious
creatures and meet the people who study them.

The Princess America Project is dedicated to bringing marine issues into
the classroom of elementary and secondary schools with classroom
presentations and our Internet newsletter. Take a look at:

http://www.neosoft.com/~tallship

Past issues have reported on subjects including the Texas Marine Mammal
Stranding Network, the La Salle Shipwreck Project, Kemp's ridley sea
turtles and NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Lab.

Also, log on to see the latest photos of our boat, the "Princess America,"
as we finish up repairs. It's been a lot of work and we're looking forward
to finally setting sail on our voyage of discovery.

Educators and parents, we want feedback. Please let us know how you use the
Princess America Project in your class or at home and how we can improve.
We are delighted to announce that we are now part of the Houston
Independent School District's Houston Urban Learning Initiatives in a
Networked Community (HU-LINC). Also, the Houston Museum of Natural Science
has invited us to help prepare and co-teach a summer class based on
subjects covered in the Princess America Newsletter.

Thanks to all the readers who've followed our progress and our supporters
who've assisted in this ambitious project.

Welcome aboard mates!

Some weeks ago, a group of college students were sent out to explore the
MOOs. "Go and find what all this is about!", they were told. Surprisingly,
many of them labeled their experience as frustrating, to put it mildly...
Aside from the usual connection quirks, they found themselves "ignored" or
"bad treated" in some MOO communities, and their MOObie (new to a MOO)
status was a "social" disadvantage to communicate with the "expert" MOOers.
It seems they are not going to return to a MOO... ever.

So, maybe it is a good idea to inaugurate our 1999 OERG Discussion Nights
talking about this issue. What can we do to make first-timers more
comfortable in a MOO? How can a MOO environment be made more responsive to
newbies expectations? What responsibilities a MOO community holds regarding
their visitors? Do archwizards or MOO administrators have setup any rules
re. welcoming MOObies to their communities? Are expert players paying
attention to the needs of inexperienced MOOers?

MOObie or seasoned player, you're invited to share your views on this
subject with many colleagues, at the Online Educators' Resource Group's
monthly Discussion Night, Education Conference Room, Diversity University
MainMOO, this coming Sunday, 21 February 1999, 8pm EST.
